La Rochelle Yearbook 2025

VERENIGINGS

Term 1 started with a bang as we refreshed the noticeboard. For Open Day on 11 February, we tried something new: instead of being in the En Avant Centre, we set up outside the French classroom. We organised three games for the future Larries, with lollipops as prizes and plenty of help from the French learners. A few days later, on Valentine’s Day, the remaining lollipops found their way to the French learners as a sweet treat. The second term sprang to life with a Movie Night on 6 May, where we watched Astérix et Obélix together with the German Club in the French classroom. On 23 May, we celebrated our annual Mardi Gras tradition. To boost participation, the Grade 8s registered their hats beforehand – a fun new twist for everyone. Nina Ferreira kindly baked cookies for each contestant, and our judges, Mrs Vera Bestbier, Ms Angelique Barnard and Mr Frans Botha Visser, selected the winners: Kate Wiehahn (1st), Kristen Minnaar (2nd) and Gabriellia Vermeulen (3rd).

In the First Term, we updated and redecorated the notice board and prepared for Open Day on 11 February. On that day, we offered engaging activities for the primary school learners, with some parents joining in with great enthusiasm. One of the highlights of the year was our German / French Movie Night in Term 2, where learners enjoyed an evening of film ( Astérix et Obélix ) and snacks. We hope to see many more learners participating next year. To generate extra excitement and a sense of appreciation for everyday school life, unique German-themed keychains were handed out in Term 3. These had individual German expressions on them such as ‘Volle Kanne’, ‘Da geht die Post ab’, ‘Das ist der Hammer’ and ‘Glückspilz’. Each one was inscribed with the special message on the back: ‘Manchmal vergiss du wie großartig du bis also ist dies deine Erinnerung.’ (‘Sometimes you forget how amazing you are, so this is your reminder.’) We also handed out some bookmarks with the message ‘Deutsch macht Spaß.’ (‘German is fun.’) Another special event was our Civvies Days, which not only raised funds, but also gave students the opportunity to unite and celebrate. Looking ahead, we hope to organise many more engaging and enjoyable activities, involving more grades and creating even more opportunities in order to speak and experience this remarkable language. Den neuen Lernenden der Deutschen-AG 2026 wünschen wir viel Erfolg und freuen uns auf alles, was Sie erreichen und leisten werden ! Frau Angelique Barnard and the German Society Members

THE GERMAN SOCIETY Im Jahr 2025 bestand die Deutsch-AG/der Deutschklub aus Gabriella Marx, Summer Hartzenberg und Lienmarie Pienaar. While these three girls represented the Society, there were many helping hands – especially in Grades 9 and 10 – who contributed to making all of our endeavours possible. A special word of thanks goes to Ms Angelique Barnard for her dedication, hard work and the extra hours she spent bringing many of the ideas to life.
