ripening of the early cultivars, but the situation improved as the season progressed. Despite lower rainfall during the growing season (Figure ROB 1) , producers had sufficient water for irrigation as they started the season with full dams. The vineyards’ water consumption was higher than usual due to reduced rainfall, larger canopies and more time in the optimal window for photosynthesis and transpiration. The harvest season itself was dry, and Botrytis bunch rot was not a significant issue. As a result, producers were able to leave the fruit hanging until the desired ripeness levels were reached. Thanks to minimal rainfall, the grape intake proceeded smoothly without interruptions. Production trends The harvest began one to two weeks later than usual, with the early cultivars ripening later than normal. An increase in crop size is expected, attributed to healthy canopies, improved fruit set, favourable growing conditions, and sufficient irrigation water. While some early cultivars experienced variations in production due to early frost damage, the yields of the red cultivars were generally higher compared to the previous season.

Grape and wine quality

Winemakers are confident that excellent wine quality is expected this season. The white wines display vibrant fruity notes, while the red wines

have shown excellent colour development. Initially, acidity levels were very high, but these normalised as the season progressed. Across the board, the pH levels were relatively low, in the context of this region. Due to the later ripening of early cultivars and the timely ripening of later cultivars, there was increased pressure on the cellars during the harvest. However, with limited rainfall throughout this period, this pressure was managed successfully, and few issues were reported.
