VERITAS TAKES ANOTHER LEAP FORWARD After 31 years as the oldest and most trusted competition for market- ready wines and brandies in South Africa, Veritas is delighted to announce that consumers will now have the opportunity to find more information on the bottles of the Double Gold and Gold medal winning wines. The award stickers will in future display the score that the particular wine was awarded by the judges. For Double Gold the scores will range from 93 – 100, while those of the Gold winners will range from 90 – 92. We believe that by revealing the actual score of these awarded wines, further credit will be given to the wines, the winemakers and their teams, including the viticulturists. Consumers can buy these wines with confidence as all the entries to Veritas are monitored by the inspectors of SA Wine Industry Information and Systems (Sawis) to comply with the competition’s strict rules. This includes verifying the various documents and the Wine of Origin and bottling and labelling details. An innovation this year has taken wine competition entry to new heights by the introduction of fully digital wine and brandy entries without any paper- work. The ground-breaking development of a dedicated website for participants to enter for the Veritas Awards by following step-by-step procedures has enabled quick and easy entering of each wine or brandy’s details. This included the same information as required in the past and tediously entered in hard copy – including WSR2A and WSRSA certificates, packshots and tasting notes of each entry. This information will now automatically also be loaded onto the Vino Veritas App by CTP for release once the results are announced. It was decided in 2017 to annually name one wine as the overall champion of the Veritas competition. This top accolade, known as the Veritas Vertex Award, takes its name from the Latin vertex, which means “highest point”. It has now also been decided to name this award the Duimpie Bayly Veritas Vertex Award after Duimpie Bayly, a champion of the industry, wine legend and former chairperson of the SA National Wine Show and Veritas, who sadly passed away in August. This, in honour of his immense contribution to South African wine over many years. We are also thrilled by the phenomenal success of the above-mentioned Vino Veritas App by CTP, which we launched last year to enable consumers to buy the award-winners directly online for door-to-door delivery by our partner, GetWine. This means that the wine- and brandy-buying public can download the App on their smartphones or PCs. If you have not registered yet, please do so, and access the results to immediately order any of the 236 products that won Double Gold or Gold at the 2021 Veritas Awards. THE MEDALISTS

The Veritas Awards, South Africa’s premier wine and brandy competition, attracted 1 285 medal contenders this year. An authoritative jury, comprising 64 local specialists, scrutinized candidates for Veritas fame during a marathon five-day blind tasting session. The seven most keenly contested categories in terms of entries received are: Red Blends (166), Sauvignon Blanc (150), Cabernet Sauvignon (110), Shiraz (107), Chenin Blanc (104), Chardonnay (93) and Pinotage (86). A total of 24 brandies were entered in three categories: Standard and Potstill. In total, 1 108 medals were awarded – 88 double gold, 147 gold, 199 silver outstanding, 411 silver and 263 bronze. Top scorers in the Double Gold medal stakes for Wine were Red Blends (12), Sauvignon Blanc (11), Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Blanc and Cap Classique (6), Chardonnay (5), Pinotage and Museum White (4), Museum Red (3), Merlot, Museum NLH, Shiraz and White Blends with 2 medals each. A Double Gold medal each was awarded to Cabernet Franc, Cap Classique Rosé, Heritage Vineyard Wines, Museum Cap Classique, Other Red Cultivars, Riesling and Sémillon. Double golds for Fortified wines Cape Style and Red Muscadel (2) and with 1 medal each were Museum Cape Vintage, Museum Red Dessert Wine, Museum White Dessert Wine and White Muscadel. Potstill Brandy excelled with 7 Double Gold awards and Standard Brandy (1). In the Gold medal stakes, Red Blends (30) was tops, followed by Sauvignon Blanc (23), Merlot (10), Cabernet Sauvignon and Cap Classique with 8 med- als each, then Chardonnay (7), Chenin Blanc (5), Shiraz (5), Museum: White Wine, Pinotage, Potstill Brandies and White Blends with 4 medals each. Three medals were awarded to Cap Classique Rosé, Cape Style, Colombar and Dessert Wine followed by 2 medals each for Cinsaut, Museum Red, NLH, Standard Brandies and Viognier. One medal each was awarded to Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Museum Cap Classique, Museum Cape Vintage, Museum Dessert White Wine, Natural Sweet, Other Red Cultivars, Pinot Noir, Red Muscadel, Riesling, Straw Wine, White Muscadel and White Wine from Red Cultivars. THE DUIMPIE BAYLY VERITAS VERTEX AWARD

The Board of Veritas decided in 2017 to name one wine as the overall champion of the competition. This top accolade, known as the Veritas Vertex Award, takes its name from the Latin vertex , which means “highest point”. Vertex is sometimes also used to indicate the ‘top’ or ‘high point’ of something, such as the vertex of an isosceles triangle, which is the ‘top’ corner opposite its base – which fits perfectly into the Veritas Awards notion of being the pinnacle of all the medals awarded. Duimpie Bayly, a Champion of the Industry, wine legend and former Chairman of the SA National Wine Show and Veritas sadly passed away in August 2021. The board decided to name this award the Duimpie Bayly Veritas Vertex Award in future in honour of his immense contribution to South African wine.

A panel of judges was nominated to taste all the Double Gold winning wines and to select the Veritas Vertex Award from them.

VERITAS PAYS HOMAGE TO LEADING INDUSTRY FIGURES

The tradition of annually honouring a handful of industry leaders took place at this year’s 31st Veritas Awards ceremony on Saturday 6 November. This award serves as recognition for exemplary service to the industry over the years – acknowledging their commitment and paying homage for remarkable achievements. Thereby seven luminaries received the 2021 Living Legends Scroll of Honour for their dedication to and enthusiasm and passion for the local wine and brandy industries. KOWIE DU TOIT Kowie du Toit, a veteran of 50 harvests and still going strong, is one of only a few winemakers that can raise their glass to such longevity. Kowie hails from Rawsonville. He spent three years studying under the guidance of Stellenbosch University’s Prof Orffer at Welgevallen and Elsenburg where he worked on many of the crossings initiated by the legendary professor. He joined Simonsvlei Winery in 1970 where he fine-tuned his wine making skills under the watchful eye of Oom Sarel Rossouw, a doyen of young wine maker training. Here Kowie specialised in making Chenin blanc wines. In 1973 he moved to Vlottenburg Cellar (today Stellenbosch Hills) where he spent 30 years as manager/winemaker, creating quality wines for this well- known cellar. During his time at Vlottenburg he followed in the footsteps of Oom Sarel and continued to train many new young winemakers. From 2004 he concentrated on his consulting business, making wine for a number of clients at various cellars. He joined the wine making team at Taaibosch Cellar outside Somerset West in 2018, while working at Pink Valley rose wines as well. CELIA GILLOWAY Celia’s journey in the wine industry began in 1999 as office administrator at WINE magazine, a Ramsay Son & Parker publication. A few months later she took over as tasting co-ordinator and over the next 12 years she became the stalwart responsible for organising and running the monthly wine category and new release tastings. This included the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show started by WINE magazine and Michael Fridjhon, as well as many other wine competitions.

These competitions provided her the platform to work with many wine and spirits legends from all over the world. Her duties included organising award functions as well as the Top 100 Restaurant and Dine Awards. In 2011 she was part of the team who launched the Classic Wine Magazine in association with Classic FM SA. Here she continued using her expertise to manage all the tastings, awards and the day-to-day running of the magazine. Celia started her own business in 2014, working for amongst others, the Platter guide, International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) and Juliet Cullinan. Her main aim was to pay forward to the industry that gave her so much joy; she did this through organising many fundraisers. She is continuing to play an important part in managing a variety of competitions including Mosaic Top 5 Pinot Noir, The Merit Awards and The Aurora International Taste Challenge. Her love for Malbec inspired her to start the Malbec Challenge, as well as the Cabernet Franc Challenge with the late Cobie van Oort. Her passion is wine and her aim is to highlight these varieties to the consumers – all while still running audited competitions professionally at the lowest cost to producers. MARIUS LABUSCHAGNE Marius was born in Windhoek, completed his schooling at Boyshigh in Paarl and obtained his degree in journalism at Stellenbosch University. Marius’s passion for wine writing has been cultivated over more than forty years. By 1982 he had been a regular reporter and editor for Die Burgers’s former weekly insert “Die Burger Boland” with wine news featuring prime. In 1985 Labuschagne joined Wynboer magazine (now WineLand) as assistant editor; a position he held for eight years. Here he continued to add to his vast knowledge of the wine industry with a wide variety of articles. In later years, Marius started writing on a freelance basis for numerous newspapers, publications and radio columns. He launchedML Communications which provides wine news and information to the media with intent to put the spotlight on the Cape Winelands and its wines. Of his first clients were the Veritas Awards and SA Young Wine Show where he served for six years as the media consultant for these competitions. He also handled media liaison and marketing for the Pinotage Association and Absa Top 10 Pinotage Competition for 13 years.

Founded on years of experience in the wine industry and numerous wine competitions, Marius saw the opportunity to start a competition for terroir- driven wines in 2006. The Novare SA Terroir Awards was born and had grown over the years into one of the most successful competitions awarding wines from the many different terroirs of the country. He handed this competition over to SA National Wine Show Association three years ago. Marius is not only an excellent wine writer; he also has particularly good judgment when it comes to wine. His descriptions of wines are accurate and entice many a reader to read more on the subject. CAREL NEL Carel hails from Calitzdorp where his family has been in the wine industry since the 1880’s. He obtained a B.Sc. Viticulture and Oenology degree at Stellenbosch University in 1978 and became a Cape Wine Master in 1991. He is a member of the Cape Winemakers Guild since 1988 and one of only three winemakers to be a member of both the Cape Wine Masters and Cape Winemakers Guild. Carel has played a key role in promoting Port in South Africa over the years. He is a founding member and first chairman of the Cape Port Producers Association. Under his leadership, the Cape Ruby, Cape Vintage and Cape Tawny designations were established in South Africa and he was instrumental in improving the quality of Cape Port and aligning it with international standards. Carel served as chairperson of Klein Karoo Wine Show Association for 14 years and has been convenor of the Veritas Awards and SA Young Wine Show panels for Port for many years. At local level he was a founding member and first chairman of the annual Port Festival held in Calitzdorp. At the SA Young Wine Show, Carel showed his versatility as winemaker. Over the years he has won the SA Champion Port 10 times, two SA Champion Sauvignon Blanc, as well as a SA Champion Red Blend. At the Veritas Awards he has won 25 Double Gold medals for Port, Brandy, Muscadel and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as best producer in 2005. He has also won 18 Platter 5 stars for Port, Brandy and Muscadel. At international level he has received great recognition from Jamie Goode, Robert Parker, Jancis Robinson and Steven Tanzar, and has recently received the 2021 Best SA Port Award from Tim Atkin. JOHAN PIENAAR Johan Pienaar was born and bred in Stellenbosch. After matric at Paul Roos Gymnasium, he graduated with a B.Sc. in Viticulture at Stellenbosch University and B.Sc. (Hons) at University of Pretoria. Later on he studied management and marketing. Johan is one of those strong, quiet people who have had a massive impact on viticulture in South Africa. His career in the wine industry began as a junior researcher at Nietvoorbij, where after he became an agricultural guidance officer, followed by head of the Stellenbosch region of the Department of Agriculture. Thereafter, 40 years as viticulture counsellor at the KWV followed, and later regional manager and viticulture consultant at Vinpro until

his retirement 11 years ago. Here he had made pioneering contributions to the establishment of the viticulture consultation service of KWV and Vinpro. Johan’s career was marked by his involvement with many industry committees and organisations such as the South African Society for Enology & Viticulture, Stellenbosch Agricultural Society and the South African Agricultural Counselling Association of which he was chairperson of the Western Cape branch. He was also one of the first members of the Western Cape viticulture discussion group. He was a member of the working group for the drafting of cultivar guidelines for the Western Cape wine cultivation regions and founding member of six viticulture study groups for Stellenbosch producers. Under his leadership, the drafting and presentation of management courses for wine grape producers took precedence. He wrote viticulture notes for the certificate and diploma courses of the Cape Wine Academy and often acted as examiner for the Cape Wine Master students. Johan was an inaugural management member of the Pinotage Association and remains today as an honorary member. He has published about 38 local, and 3 overseas publications on viticulture and counselling. ERICA PLATTER Erica comes from a sugar farm in KwaZulu Natal. This is also where she was schooled and completed her university education. Her dream to become a journalist came true when she started working at the Cape Herald as editor of the women’s pages. There after followed a career as news reporter and columnist for newspapers in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. Erica and her foreign correspondent husband, John conceived the idea of a South African wine guide when they moved to a small farm in Franschhoek in 1978. “Platter”, an instant best-seller, saw its first publication while they still held day jobs – Erica was deputy editor of national women’s magazine, Fair Lady, while John wrote, farmed and made wine on the three different farms which had become their homes, including Delaire - which Erica had named. Today Erica is a writer, editor and publisher of wine and food story books. They sold their interests in the Platter book and moved back to KwaZulu Natal. Their next book, Africa Uncorked, winner of the international Glenfiddich Award, chronicled their travels to and through the vineyards and cellars of 13 different countries, from Algeria to Zimbabwe. Story-telling is the Platter couple’s forte. It is what has also distinguished Erica’s four food books, focusing on the produce, dishes, chefs and cooks of KwaZulu Natal, and in particular, this province’s quintessential dish, Durban Curry. These all won Gourmand World Cookbook awards. More recently, she reported on young Zimbabwean refugees who have become top sommeliers. Jancis Robinson featured the original story on her website and the ZimSomms are now the stars of an international documentary film. Erica’s writing is still continuing – the Platters are ready to embark on their next wine odyssey, the rise of SA chenin. And as we know Erica, it will happen, a little differently, a little later.

DON TOOTH Don was born in Johannesburg and matriculated in Kimberley. He studied at University of Port Elizabeth, before joining De Beers. He also completed an MBA from University of Stellenbosch. In 1985 he joined Anglo American Farms near Franschhoek. His passion for the South African wine industry started late 1987 when, as a financial manager, he developed and presented the business plan to acquire Vergelegen to the Anglo American Board. In 1991 he took responsibility for the Western Cape’s farming operations of Anglo American Farms, which included Vergelegen and Boschendal. In 1994 he was promoted to Director - Wine Operations. He played a mammoth role in the marketing success of Vergelegen wines over 30 years, increasing wine sales both locally and internationally, while promoting South African wine at the same time. Don’s broader involvement in the wine industry began with him joining the Board of Cape Estate Wine Producers Association and he was part of the team that had developed the restructured Estate Wine Producers legislation as we know it today. He also served on the Board of Wines of South Africa for several years and was a founder member of the Cape Vintners Classification. In 2000 he was promoted to Managing Director of Anglo American Farms and oversaw the restructuring of the Company and the sale of Boschendal. He held this position until his retirement earlier this year, spending his whole career of 45 years with DeBeers/Anglo American.
