VERITAS TAKES ANOTHER LEAP FORWARD After 31 years as the oldest and most trusted competition for market- ready wines and brandies in South Africa, Veritas is delighted to announce that consumers will now have the opportunity to find more information on the bottles of the Double Gold and Gold medal winning wines. The award stickers will in future display the score that the particular wine was awarded by the judges. For Double Gold the scores will range from 93 – 100, while those of the Gold winners will range from 90 – 92. We believe that by revealing the actual score of these awarded wines, further credit will be given to the wines, the winemakers and their teams, including the viticulturists. Consumers can buy these wines with confidence as all the entries to Veritas are monitored by the inspectors of SA Wine Industry Information and Systems (Sawis) to comply with the competition’s strict rules. This includes verifying the various documents and the Wine of Origin and bottling and labelling details. An innovation this year has taken wine competition entry to new heights by the introduction of fully digital wine and brandy entries without any paper- work. The ground-breaking development of a dedicated website for participants to enter for the Veritas Awards by following step-by-step procedures has enabled quick and easy entering of each wine or brandy’s details. This included the same information as required in the past and tediously entered in hard copy – including WSR2A and WSRSA certificates, packshots and tasting notes of each entry. This information will now automatically also be loaded onto the Vino Veritas App by CTP for release once the results are announced. It was decided in 2017 to annually name one wine as the overall champion of the Veritas competition. This top accolade, known as the Veritas Vertex Award, takes its name from the Latin vertex, which means “highest point”. It has now also been decided to name this award the Duimpie Bayly Veritas Vertex Award after Duimpie Bayly, a champion of the industry, wine legend and former chairperson of the SA National Wine Show and Veritas, who sadly passed away in August. This, in honour of his immense contribution to South African wine over many years. We are also thrilled by the phenomenal success of the above-mentioned Vino Veritas App by CTP, which we launched last year to enable consumers to buy the award-winners directly online for door-to-door delivery by our partner, GetWine. This means that the wine- and brandy-buying public can download the App on their smartphones or PCs.
