VINOVERITAS APP – A GIANT LEAP FOR VERITAS ONLINE WINE SALES After thirty years as the oldest and most trusted competition for market- ready wines and brandies, Veritas is delighted to announce the first of its kind APP for wine competitions. This milestone has been achieved despite the difficulties that the wine industry has encountered during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Those coveted Veritas Gold and Double Gold medal winning wines and brandies will now be available for easy ordering and delivery on your door- step thanks to a new specially, uniquely developed dedicated app for online wines sales – a first in the world of wine competitions. This giant leap for the country’s top wine competition has been made pos- sible by a ground-breaking collaboration between the organisers – the SA National Wine Show Association (SANWSA) and its long-standing financial partner CTP’s SA Litho’s division, with the well-established Getwine portal for online services and the Johannesburg-based Cognition app-developer. This significant wine industry development comes at a most opportune time, when the South African consumer has shown a major swing in favour of on- line purchasing, including wine, as a result of Covid-19 restrictions and reali- ties, as well as a need to recover the wine industry’s lost sales momentum. It is a proud moment in the 30 year history of Veritas that we can launch this unique app that will benefit both the SA Wine Industry and the consumer. There will be a direct sales benefit for all the Double Gold and Gold award winning wines and cellars already this year. The focus of Veritas from the beginning was to provide the wine lover with a guide to the top wines that were entered in the competition, and now the consumer can order the top achievers from the comfort of his home. This is a case where we have suc- ceeded in changing a negative situation into a huge positive that will greatly benefit the South African wine industry during these trying times and with long-term benefits for all concerned. This means that the wine- and brandy-buying public can download the VinoVeritas app on their smartphones or PCs and then access the results and immediately order the 198 products that won Gold or Double Gold at the 2020 Veritas Awards. A prerequisite to entering for Veritas is that a minimum of 300 bottles of wine and 120 of brandy have to be available for purchasing – but access to these has often been logistically challenging through liquor outlets country- wide. The collaboration with Getwine with its streamlined distribution net- work will now radically change this situation. We trust that this initiative by Veritas will bring your favourite award winning wine very soon to your cellar and to be enjoyed at your table.

THE MEDALISTS

The Veritas Awards, South Africa’s premier wine and brandy competition, attracted 1 279 medal contenders this year. An authoritative jury, comprising 64 local specialists, scrutinized candidates for Veritas fame during a marathon five-day blind tasting session. The seven most keenly contested categories in terms of entries received are: Red Blends (181), Sauvignon Blanc (149), Cabernet Sauvignon (123), Shiraz (113), Chenin Blanc (102), Chardonnay (102) and Pinotage (70). A total of 20 brandies were entered in three categories: Standard, Potstill and Vintage. In total, 1 092 medals were awarded – 70 double gold, 128 gold, 185 silver outstanding, 506 silver and 203 bronze. Top scorers in the Double Gold medal stakes for Wine were Chenin Blanc(9), Sauvignon Blanc (8), Chardonnay (6), Cabernet Sauvignon (5), Pinotage and Cap Classique, with 4 medals each, White blends, Other Red blends, Museum Red wine with 3 medals each, Merlot, Cape Blend and Shiraz with 2 medals each. A Double Gold medal each was awarded to Any other cultivar – Bukettraube, Bordeaux Blend, Certified Heritage Vineyard wines, Museum White wine, NLH, Rhone Blend, Semillon and Straw wine. Double golds for Fortified wines with 1 medal each were Red Muscadel, White Muscadel, Cape Port style Vintage and Museum Dessert White. Potstill Brandy excelled with 6 Double Gold awards and Standard Brandy (1) In the Gold medal stakes, Chenin Blanc (10) was tops, followed by Cap Classique, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz with 9 medals each, then Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Other Red blends and White wine blends with 7 medals each, Cape Blend, Cape Port style Ruby/Tawny/Vintage/other and Chardonnay 6 medals, Cabernet Franc, NLH, Pinot Noir, Rhone Blend, Other Red cultivars, Museum Red Wine, Potstill brandy and Red Muscadel, 3 medals each, Malbec, Merlot, Museum Cap Classique, Museum White wine, Straw wine, White Muscadel, Museum Dessert wine 2 each. One medal each was awarded to Certified Heritage Vineyard wines, Museum Cape Port Style Vintage, Bordeaux blend, Standard Brandy, Viognier, Weisser Riesling and Dessert Wine. THE VERITAS VERTEX AWARD

The Board of Veritas decided in 2017 to name one wine as the overall cham- pion of the competition. This top accolade, known as the Veritas Vertex Award , takes its name from the Latin vertex , which means “highest point”. Vertex is sometimes also used to indicate the ‘top’ or ‘high point’ of some- thing, such as the vertex of an isosceles triangle, which is the ‘top’ corner opposite its base – which fits perfectly into the Veritas Awards notion of being the pinnacle of all the medals awarded. A panel of judges was nominated to taste all the Double Gold winning wines and to select the Veritas Vertex Award from them.
