NATIONAL INFORMATION
OVERVIEW 2025/2026 PRODUCTION OVERVIEW *All cartons expressed as 4.5 kg equivalent.
The 2025/26 season highlighted the complex and evolving operating environment facing the global table grape industry and reinforced the need to respond strategically to these changing conditions. While South Africa delivered its largest table grape crop on record, the season formed part of a succession of challenging years during which global trade has been shaped by geopolitical conflict, shipping disruptions, changing trade policies, inflationary pressures and climate-related events . These factors have created sustained uncertainty and volatility across global markets, while driving up the cost of key production inputs such as fertiliser, fuel, agrochemicals and logistics for South African producers. At the same time, these global challenges have coincided with local constraints, most notably the under performance of the country's ports, placing additional pressure on exports. With consumers in many of South Africa's key export markets continuing to face cost-of-living pressures, the industry is operating in a far more complex and competitive environment, where agility and a focus on long-term sustainability have become essential . Despite these pressures, the South African table grape industry demonstrated resilience. Final inspection volumes reached 81.25 million cartons (78.9 million cartons, 2024/25) , with 78.3 million cartons exported (78.2 million cartons, 2024/25) , confirming South Africa’s position as one of the world’s leading suppliers of fresh table grapes. The latest vine census recorded a marginal 0.3% decline in national plantings to 19,343 hectares , continuing the longer-term trend towards a stable production footprint. However, ongoing replacement of older vineyards with higher-yielding new-generation cultivars continues to improve productivity, enabling modest production growth. A MORE COMPETITIVE GLOBAL MARKET Europe and the United Kingdom remained South Africa’s largest export destinations, together accounting for 86% of total exports . Europe received 52.1 million cartons , representing a 16% increase on the previous season. Competing Southern Hemisphere suppliers, particularly Peru and Brazil, also increased ship ments in the same marketing window. South African exports to the United Kingdom declined by 6% to 13.5 million cartons and exports to North America fell sharply due to tariffs and exchange rate pressure. These trends illlustrate the importance of market retention. While important milestones were achieved during the year – including South Africa’s first commercial exports to the Philippines , temporary tariff-free access to China and the conclusion of the export protocol for the Republic of Korea – the industry’s strategic priority must increasingly shift towards protecting and strengthening its position in established markets. Ensuring that table grapes remain a preferred fruit choice for consumers will be essential to supporting sustainable prices in an increasingly competitive global marketplace. SEASON OVERVIEW The season started earlier than usual following warmer weather before and during the early production period, resulting in peak harvest and export volumes occurring earlier than usual.

SATI STATISTICS 2026
As global table grape production continues to expand, maintaining market share will require greater emphasis on consumer demand, quality, consistency of supply and the long term competitiveness of South African table grapes.
These higher early-season volumes coincided with severe wind disruptions and operational constraints at the Port of Cape Town , creating significant congestion during the busiest export period. Disruptions resulted in stock build-ups, vessel delays and diversion of fruit to alternative ports. The Port of Cape Town’s share of table grape exports declined from 91% during the previous season to 76% , while exports through Eastern Cape ports increased from 6% to 21% . While this strategy provided essential additional capacity, the diversions came at substantially higher cost to producers. Encouragingly, four of South Africa’s five production regions met or exceeded their crop estimates. Only the Hex River Region fell slightly below expectations following rainfall during the latter part of the harvest. STRATEGIC FOCUS
The 2025/26 season reinforced that South Africa’s long-term competitiveness depends on focusing on the factors that remain within the industry’s control. Cultivar selection, production timing, quality, sustainability, coordinated logistics planning and market development will become increasingly important as global competition intensifies. Closer collaboration across the value chain will be essential to improve planning, strengthen market positioning and ensure South African fruit continues to meet customer requirements. Greater operational efficiency, improved accountability and reliable export infrastructure are essential if South Africa is to retain its reputation as a dependable supplier and remain competitive in global markets. While the industry recognises that rebuilding logistics per formance will take time and sustained investment, continued improvements at the Port of Cape Town remain critical. SATI along with other industry partners such as the Fresh Produce Exporters’ Forum and Agbiz, continued to engage constructively with Transnet, government and logistics stakeholders throughout the season while also advancing Phase 3 of the SATI/ Transnova Africa prescriptive logistics model project to support more coordinated planning across the value chain. Looking ahead, SATI will continue to invest in projects that support the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the South African table grape industry, including through research, market development, logistics initiatives and stakeholder collaboration.

INDUSTRY AT A GLANCE
NORTHERN PROVINCES Regional Representatives: Brett Gosling | Christine Gosling The Northern Provinces experienced some recovery in the 2025/26 season, packing 5.9 mil lion cartons for export – 16.5% above the initial estimate and 23% more than the previous season’s 4.8 million cartons. Volumes returned to levels more closely aligned with the three-year average after a late cold weather pattern curtailed production of early-season varieties in 2024/25. Total area under table grape production declined by 10% to 1,727 hectares in 2026. ORANGE RIVER Regional Representatives: Gabriel Viljoen | Elzaan Lombard The Orange River region exceeded expectations, packing 26.8 million cartons for export during the 2025/26 season. This was almost 5% above the initial estimate and 7.2% higher than the previous season’s 25 million cartons, making it the region’s largest crop to date. The region continues to benefit from strong productivity, while the total area under table grape production remained relatively stable, declining by less than 1% year-on-year to 5,620 hectares. OLIFANTS RIVER Regional Representatives: Morné Paxton | Anneke Greeff The Olifants River region concluded the 2025/26 season with 4.2 million cartons packed for export, 13.5% above the initial estimate and approximately 5% lower than the previous season. Volumes remained consistent with the long-term production trend for the region. The total area under table grape production increased marginally to approximately 1,169 hectares, remaining broadly in line with the region’s 10-year average. BERG RIVER Regional Representatives: Carel van der Merwe | Liezl Jonker The Berg River region packed approximately 20 million cartons for export during the 2025/26 season, modestly exceeding the initial estimate of 19.5 million cartons and recording a 2.5% increase on the previous season. The total area under table grape production increased by 2% to 4,724 hectares, reflecting continued investment in the region’s long-term production capacity. HEX RIVER Regional Representatives: Michael Vorster | Maré Steenkamp The Hex River region packed 24.4 million cartons for export during the 2025/26 season, achieving 95.8% of the initial crop estimate. Volumes inspected for export were 3.5% lower than the previous season, largely due to rainfall that affected the crop during the latter part of the season. The total area under table grape production declined marginally to 6,103 hectares.
