SATI STATISTICS 2025
NATIONAL INFORMATION
OVERVIEW 2024/2025 PRODUCTION OVERVIEW *All cartons expressed as 4.5 kg equivalent.
The 2024/25 season marked a milestone for South Africa’s table grape industry with export volumes at 78.2 million 4.5 kg cartons (78.9 million cartons inspected) reaching the highest recorded volume to date. SATI remained focused on addressing logistical and trade matters through collaborative efforts with industry stakeholders. South African grapes continued to enjoy favourable demand in global markets, underscoring the industry’s commitment to quality and reliability. The EU and UK received 58% and 18% of exports, respectively, and the industry remains dedicated to retaining these markets. Other key markets demonstrated growth, with exports to Canada and the USA observing 7% and 20% growth respectively compared to the average for the last five seasons. Exports to the Middle East increased by 26% over the past year while exports to China and Hong Kong decreased by about 50%. Another notable achievement this season was South Africa securing market access for table grape exports to the Philippines. This development is the result of a long-standing collaboration between the government and the industry. South Africa now has access to 17 of the world’s top 18 table grape importing countries. SATI’s latest vine census reveals a stabilisation in total table grape hectares planted. While there was a slight decrease of 0.4% from 2024, bringing the total to 19,401 hectares in 2025, this figure represents a stabilisation at just 3% below the five-year average. The top five varieties still account for half (50%) of the total hectares planted, namely: Crimson Seedless (15%), Sweetglobe™️ (9%), Autumncrisp ® (9%), Sweet Celebration™️ (9%), & Prime (8%). Hectares of licensed varieties continue to grow, and there was a further decrease in unlicensed varieties such as Crimson Seedless (-2%) and Thompson Seedless (-23%). SEASON OVERVIEW The 2024/25 season was favourable overall with no major weather disruptions and smoother port operations. Overall, table grape growing regions experienced favourable weather conditions which facilitated the market receiving sufficient volumes of quality grapes. The only region that experienced some challenges due to rain in their early season was the Northern Provinces, but with minor impact on national volumes. Apart from the Northern Provinces region that packed 4.8 million cartons, which is 20% less than the previous season, the other four production regions all showed increased year-on-year (YoY) packing volumes for the 2024/25 season. The Hex River and Orange River regions packed their highest volumes to date with 25.3 million cartons (+9% YoY) and 25 million cartons (+3% YoY) respectively. The Berg River region packed 19.5 million (+5% YoY) and the Olifants River region packed 4.4 million cartons (+11% YoY). Table-grape exports increased by 5% compared to last season (78.2 million cartons in 2024/25 vs. 74.1 million prior). The volume of exports that went through the Cape Town Container Terminal and Cape Town Multi-Purpose Terminal combined, increased from 82% (10% conventional) of total exports in 2023/24 to 90% (7% conventional) in 2024/25. Logistical challenges eased somewhat compared to prior seasons, as Transnet, industry and other stakeholders collaborated to address inefficiencies at the Port of Cape Town. Overall, the stock build-up position at the Cape Town Container Terminal, through which the bulk of SA’s table-grape exports are shipped, was lower and peaked for a shorter period
2
SATI STATISTICS 2025
In the 2024/25 season, SATI implemented Phase 2 of the prescriptive logistics model, building on the data-driven approach developed in Phase 1 to optimise logistics operations and reduce stock levels during peak export weeks.
compared with the previous season. This indicates some improvement in the port’s performance. In a shift in the global table grape market, China took the top spot as the world’s largest exporter in 2024 (TradeMap, 2025), surpassing Peru and Chile, as Chinese production continues to increase. South Africa now ranks as the fourth-largest global exporter and the third-largest in the Southern Hemisphere, following Peru and Chile. Southern Hemisphere trends in the 2024/25 season included recovery for Peru as export volumes increased by 32% to 151 million cartons, after adverse weather conditions resulted in a smaller harvest for Peru in the 2023/24 season. Chilean table grape exports increased by 5% to 123 million cartons. This increase is partly due to favourable weather conditions and an increase in new generation varieties coming into full production. STRATEGIC FOCUS
SATI partnered with key stakeholders in a pioneering Public Sector Partnership to co-fund the installation of two 500 kVA generators at the Cape Town Container Terminal, adding 120 reefer container plug points and helping to alleviate bottlenecks during peak deciduous export weeks. This successful initiative has sparked interest from stakeholders for future similar projects. Quality is at the forefront of South African table grape production, with rigorous quality control measures in place from vine to port. SATI remains dedicated to supporting producers’ interests and promoting sustainable commercial practices by preserving existing market access while pursuing new opportunities in developing markets. As a new season approaches, industry remains focused on proactive logistics solutions that facilitate South Africa’s reputation as a reliable supplier. SATI will continue to work with government and industry stakeholders to ensure favourable trading terms in key export markets. SATI acknowledges the valuable contributions of its stakeholders in these projects, and looks forward to ongoing collaboration and providing producers with the latest industry insights to uphold South Africa’s reputation as a preferred supplier of quality grapes to global markets.

NORTHERN PROVINCES Regional Representatives: Brett Gosling | Christine Gosling The Northern Provinces packed 4.8 million cartons for export in the 2024/25 season, which is 18% lower than its estimate (5.8 million cartons), and 20% lower than the previous season (6.0 million cartons). The lower export volume was due to a late cold weather pattern that reduced volumes on early season varieties. The Northern Provinces also have a strong local market focus that traditionally receives 15% of their total volume. Total hectares planted decreased with 3% since 2024 to 1,835 ha in 2025. ORANGE RIVER Regional Representatives: Gabriel Viljoen | Elzaan Lombard Higher yields were packed in the Orange River than originally estimated with this region ending its season at 25.0 million cartons, which is 3% more than the original estimate of 24.4 million cartons, and 3% more than the previous season (24.2 million cartons). Total hectares planted in 2025 decreased slightly with 1% since 2024 to 5,662 hectares. OLIFANTS RIVER Regional Representatives: Morné Paxton | Anneke Greeff The Olifants River region concluded the season with almost 4.4 million cartons packed, which is 1% more than its estimate (4.3 million cartons), and 11% more than the previous season (3.9 million cartons). Total hectares planted decreased by 6% to 1,090 hectares since the previous year. This was mainly due to the removal of older varieties, with new generation varieties still on the increase. BERG RIVER Regional Representatives: Carel van der Merwe | Liezl Jonker The Berg River region experienced a notable uptick in production, with packed volumes almost reaching 19.5 million cartons, which was a 5% increase from the previous season’s 18.5 million cartons and slightly above the estimated 18.7 million cartons. This growth is underpinned by a 2% expansion in total hectares planted, which now stands at 4,621 hectares. HEX RIVER Regional Representatives: Michael Vorster | Maré Steenkamp The Hex River region experienced favourable production conditions and achieved its highest volumes to date with 25.3 million cartons packed, a 9% increase compared with the previous season’s packed volumes and this season’s estimate of 23.2 million cartons. Total hectares planted increased marginally to 6,194 hectares.
