HIKES, HEIGHTS AND HARBOUR ICE CREAM The Outdoor Club launched the year on 8 February with our first hike up Paarl Mountain. The morning started off chilly, but by midday the sun was determined to test our stamina. The trail was not the toughest, but the steep climbs and Paarl’s infamous granite boulders kept things interesting. Despite the slippery rock faces making the hike more challenging, the highlight was reaching a dam where everyone enjoyed a refreshing swim. The breathtaking scenery made the effort worthwhile, reminding hikers of the value of sturdy shoes, good company and snacks along the way. On 17 May, the club tackled the Banhoek Conservancy. This hike offered participants another opportunity to be immersed in nature, while testing their endurance, but rewarding them with spectacular views of the valley.

The grand finale was Chapman’s Peak on 30 August. The drive itself felt like a movie scene, with mountains on one side and sheer cliffs dropping into the ocean on the other. Once on the trail, the views only became better – until the fog rolled in like an uninvited guest. With visibility shrinking, we wisely turned back without summitting, but remained in high spirits thanks to Mrs Venter’s Topper cookies! Delicious ice cream at Hout Bay Harbour sealed the deal, and by the time Uncle Jacques drove us home, the bus was quiet – all of us in dreamland. This year proved that every hike is an adventure – sometimes for the legs; always for the laughs.
