La Rochelle Yearbook 2024
VERENIGINGS
FRENCH Bonjour à toutes les Larries,
As I look back on the past year, I instantly feel happiness and pride for all the things and events that the French society had planned in detail, and then accomplished. Je suis très reconnaissante d’avoir pu servir dans cette société pour partager la culture et la langue française avec vous toutes. Nous aimions rendre le français amusant pour les filles qui ont choisi de s’engager dans cette matière. The first few weeks of the year were hectic as we prepared for Open Day, where Zoë Malherbe, deputy chairperson, and I promoted French to Grade 6 and 7 learners who came to see our school. We taught them a few French words by matching pictures to words. At the start of term 2, we worked alongside the German Society to organise a movie night, during which French and German students were invited to watch the French movie Intouchables . Later in the term, the time finally came for the Mardi Gras hat parade, where the Grade 8 French learners had to show off their creativity and make their French-inspired hats. Ibenathi Mantyi won first place, with Nina Theron, Zarah van Zyl, and Jamila Shaik close on her heels. A highlight in term 3 was the traditional Fête des Reines, where each French learner got a slice of delicious tricolore cake. As is the custom, a coin was hidden in one slice, found by Sienna Ellis (Gr 8), who was then crowned la Reine du jour. I want to thank my fellow committee member, Zoë, for her hard work, dedication, and great ideas, which contributed to the success of the French Society in 2024. I would also like to thank Monsieur Botha-Visser for his guidance and patience throughout this year. I am so happy to have the privilege of serving on this committee for a second year. I look forward to working with co-chairperson Zoë and alongside our new deputy chairlady, Nina Ferreira. J’espère que 2025 sera aussi fructueuse que cette année et que chaque événement sera réussi et amusant pour chaque fille qui y participe. Bien à vous, Philippa Theron – Chairperson: French Society GERMAN In 2024, the German Committee comprised Summer Hartzenberg, the chairlady, and Gabriella Marx, the vice chairlady. We want the German Committee to be something everybody can be a part of, to appreciate the beautiful language and German culture by hosting events throughout the year. Our journey in 2024 began with a resounding success, Open Day. We distributed booklets to the Grade 8 learners, hosted a memorable French and German Movie night, and participated in the lively Oktoberfest Festival in Paarl. These achievements
