Laterals should also be flushed regularly to get rid of sludge deposits (Fig. 4.38). For best results, only two to three laterals should be opened at a time to maintain enough pressure in the system to force the sludge out. Since it will make regular flushing difficult, the ends of laterals should not be tied or bundled (Fig. 4.39). Off-cut pieces of polyethylene can be used to keep the folded lateral ends in place (Fig. 4.40). This makes it easy to open the lateral ends while flushing is being carried out.
