HEADMASTER’S message

Lectori Salutem Time and tide, says the great Geoffrey Chaucer, waits for no man, and so my time in the “Captain Kirk”- chair has reached its end. To perpetuate the analogy, I continuously tried “to boldly go where no man has gone before.” The success of this focus is measured by the way others recognise and follow the lead Paarl Boys’ High has established as an organisation. Indeed, as I always say, if you just follow in the footsteps of others, you won’t leave any tracks yourself, nor will you discover anything new! And, of course, we were quite happy that other organisations have so often copied us. If one’s quest is to make a positive difference in a negative world, the true measure of success is the effectiveness one can bring to others through one’s actions. As the great Oscar Wilde so rightly said, “Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.” A simple example is our changing the Geeskomitee uniform to something more stylish in 2008; this was copied almost immediately! So was the age-old tradition of the boys ringing the old bell after their final matric exams. Just two years ago I visited a school in another province where their hostel system modelled ours (as amended in 2009) exactly. I immediately recognised the person explaining the model to us and, sure enough, after the talk he came to me with a broad smile, shook my hand and asked if I remembered his 2010 visit to gather advice on our successful model. Others were simply so great in magnitude that they proved to be uncopyable, such as the world schools’ rugby festival. Also, under the able leadership of the head of marketing, Old Boy Willem Erwee, we decided three years ago to do away with so called brands and formed a partnership with a local company to produce clothing under the Paarl Boys’ High brand itself. This was a first for schools in South Africa, showing a school management team’s unequivocal faith in their own brand. It also led to our clothes being manufactured at a cheaper rate and sold at a better price

than any other school. Indeed, as Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
