Karate

Michael Semer received his Protea colours in karate and took part at the Funakoshi Gichin – the 16th Karate World Championships in Takasaki, Japan – as part of the South African team. This championship takes place every four years. He took part in Boys 16–18 years Kumute. There were 91 entries in this age group. A total of 67 countries participated. Michael reached the third round where he was unfortunately eliminated 2 – 1. His results remain a massive achievement as the standards were of the highest quality. Kyle Corbellari competed at the Durban Open and Elite championship for the third consecutive year (2022–2024). Results: • Male Junior Kumite: gold medal • Male Junior Team Kumite: captain and gold medal • Gold medal at the Sunfest Multisport & Arts Festival in Pretoria 17–19 May. • Protea colours at the Protea Dinner At the SA National Karate Championships in Tongaat Sports Arena in Durban from 4 – 7 March this year, Kyle attained his third national title in winning the final 6 – 2, thus claiming the no 1 ranking athlete position for 2024. He was then selected as the no 1 karateka to represent South Africa at Region 5 to be held in Namibia in mid-June 2024. Kyle scored 18 points in the fourth round with only two scores against him, showing his exceptional work rate effort in practice. As the official SA champion, Kyle was selected to compete at the UFAK All Africa Games 2024 in Tunisia, the Commonwealth Karate Championships 2024 in Dhaka Bangladesh, and the World Championships 2024 in Italy, moving up in the ranks to no 46 in the world.

Underwater Hockey

Two Boys’ Highers represented Boland at the National Junior Underwater Hockey Championships held in Somerset West. Jon Dorman (Grade 12) captained the U19 Men and they ended fourth in the tournament. Jady Parsons (Grade 8D) played for the U16B side that finished in 6th position. At the prize-giving on Saturday, 23 March, the Junior Protea side that is to represent South Africa in Malaysia in July was officially announced and Jon was declared captain of the U19 Men’s side, a huge honour as most of the squad are from the Gauteng region. The clothing ceremony for this will only take place on Friday, 12 July 2025 before departure to Malaysia.
