ESPORTS CLUB IT EXPO DC Giliomee
Pieter van Zyl
The IT department recently hosted their third IT Expo. The event was a resounding success and created a platform for our talented learners, whose practical assessment task (PAT) forms part of their final mark in Grade 12, to showcase their tasks to the broader IT community. Industry professionals admired the learners’ achievements and engaged with them, creating a fantastic opportunity for sharing knowledge and discovering potential job opportunities. The evening featured not only IT learners but also Computer Applications Technology (CAT) and Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD) learners. The IT learners displayed their Delphi programmes, while the CAT learners presented their self-designed websites. Our EGD learners exhibited their technical drawing sketches along with 3D-printed models that brought their designs to life. Primary school learners and our Grade 9 learners were specially invited. This initiative helped promote our school and the subjects IT, CAT and EGD, assisting learners with their subject choices for the next year. The winners of the evening in all three categories were celebrated with much excitement: • IT : Felix Beukes (winner), Christiaan Thirion (2nd), Gregory Hall (3rd) • CAT : Wium van Tonder (winner), Bertie Milner (2nd), Jean Botha (3rd) • EGD : Joshua Petersen (winner), Cornel Scholtz (2nd), Günter Ras (3rd) We were thrilled to have Stadio Higher Education as the main sponsor. Although they could not attend the event in person this year, we look forward to welcoming them back next year for another evening celebrating innovation and creativity.
This year, PBH proudly hosted our very first internal FIFA Esports (video competitive gaming) tournament in the school hall. The tournament was a partnership with ACGL (African Cyber Gaming League) who provided the platform for our participants, adding professionalism to the event. Congratulations to Kyle Tippoo who claimed victory, securing the prize of R700. Another milestone for our Esports Club this year was our inclusion in the ‘Gameplay Esports Show | Episode 1 | Competitive Gaming za ’ on SuperSport Schools. This episode was the first livestreaming of a South African Esports event on SuperSport Schools. Being featured in this episode was an exciting and valuable experience. In addition to these events, two of our learners had the privilege of attending the Cape Town Comic Con where they could immerse themselves in the world of gaming, pop culture and digital creativity. We look forward to expanding our Esports programme in the future.
