English Debating 2023

One of the standout achievements for Paarl Boys’ High in 2023 was their consistent performance in provincial, national and international competitions. The team’s success can be attributed to the school’s dedication to nurturing the art of debate. Paarl Boys’ High has prioritised creating an environment that fosters critical thinking, effective communication and teamwork – skills that extend far beyond the debate floor. The debaters exhibited a remarkable ability to navigate complex topics with grace and precision, showcasing a deep understanding of global issues and an unwavering commitment to fostering constructive dialogue. We started our year off as usual with our Debating camp on 25 February. The new debaters met their coach, Danré Muller, and their potential teammates for the year. We then started with formal Boland debating league rounds on 8 March, which continued into the third term. During the Boland league we had mixed results, which of course is quite normal for a fairly young, new squad.

Eight of our debaters (Francois Rademeyer, Nicolaas Kruger, Zakariya Sader, Willem Joubert, Joshua Meyer, William Graham, Helgard Nolte and Nathan Fobian) took part in provincial debating, which started on 30 August. The provincial trials ended on a high note when Helgard Nolte was invited to train with the senior provincial squad. We are proud of Nathan Fobian who again represented South Africa at the World Schools debating competition held in Vietnam this year. This year we also say farewell to Danré Muller, our coach for more than eight years. He is taking on his responsibilities as a lawyer in the private sector.
