First Team Rugby Report 2023

The year 2023 was certainly filled with unique challenges. Our experiences ranged from remarkable peaks to profound disappointments. I am extremely proud of the resilience each player showed during the toughest times this season. As I type this report, I am overwhelmed by all the great memories with this team! With not much time to prepare, we went straight into the newly founded Rugby Day againts Drostdy – a great opportunity for all our teams to start the season at home. The first team played well against a physical Drostdy outfit and started the season with a victory. Next was the Porterville Bulfees where a disappointing show of officiating denied us a victory against a spirited Durbanville team. The season got pretty hectic from here; once again, I am proud of the way in which the squad worked together to achieve great results through it all. Dit was vir spanafrigters sowel as spelers ’n baie moeilike tyd.

I don’t think we will ever truly understand the impact Chris’s injury had on the team. The boys felt they wanted to play for him; at the KES Easter Festival they bravely took the field and won against strong teams from Selborne, KES and Northwood. We left Johannesburg without one of our familia members. The following weekend we lost against Oakdale on their home turf. We managed to bounce back at home against SACS before heading off to Kimberley to compete in the annual Wildeklawer Tournament. The boys fought hard and secured solid victories against Glenwood and Helpmekaar. Returning from Wildeklawer, we had a great away victory against Stellenberg before our home game against Grey College – always one of the highlights of our season. We missed some opportunities during this game; but fought all the time, I was proud of the fight we showed. Losing 30-39 is never a good result, but the boys showed heart and the ability to fight back. Die wedstryd weg teen Wynberg was ’n ware toets.
