2023 was a great year for Paarl Boys’ High Hockey. We started off the winter season with a bang, hosting our own U14 pre-season tournament that was won by our U14A side. We then travelled to Durban with our U14A, U16A and first team to compete in the inaugural Coastal Cup. Our U14A side was the only team in the entire tournament to walk away undefeated. Upon returning, the first team took part in the Fairmont Easter Hockey Festival where they ended in an overall eighth position out of 32 schools. Once we had all the pre-season games wrapped up, it was time to start the official season. The season itself was a good one; all our teams created their own bit of history by beating some of the top hockey schools in the country. A highlight was the first team beating Rondebosch away from home for what could be the first time since the two schools have been playing on astro. The first team also took part in the Cape Town International Hockey Tournament this year. They were put in a tough pool, but managed to secure themselves

a quarter final. The boys fought hard and after being 0-1 down, they came back to win the game 2-1, booking them a spot in the semis. They came up against a strong opponent in Guildford from the UK, who boasted four national players. After being 0-1 down, the boys came back and the game ended in a deadlock 2-2. The winner had to be decided with penalty shoot-outs, which we managed to win 4-2. Paarl Boys’ had secured themselves a final for the first time ever. Unfortunately, the team fell short in the final to SACS; we nevertheless are very proud of the team’s accomplishment. Post-season, the U14A side played in the U14 Top Schools Hockey Tournament, which we hosted. The boys ended top of their pool and secured a semifinal spot; they unfortunately lost to Northwood. The boys, however, beat Fairmont for third and fourth play-off and secured a bronze medal.
