WESTERN PROVINCE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP During 4 – 8 December 2015, eleven of our boys took part in the annual Western Province Swimming Champs held at the University
of the Western Cape. As always, the swimmers performed extremely well. Everyone swam personal best times and several swimmers made it to the finals, which is no small feat for the senior boys, namely Dehan van Dyk, Andre van Huyssteen, Pierre Pretorius, Walter Travis, Darren Minnies and Dewan Bubb, who have to compete in the Men’s Open category. Darren Minnies and Pierre Pretorius qualified and took part in the SA Youth Champs in Durban in April, while Andre van Huyssteen qualified and competed in the Elite Youth category. The junior boys who took part were Alex van Rooijen, Bob Fick, Werner Strauss, Jan-Hendrik Basson and Christiaan Slabbert. THE MEDAL WINNERS WERE: Andre van Huyssteen : 2 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals Darren Minnies : 1 gold and 1 silver medal Dehan van Dyk : 1 bronze medal Pierre Pretorius : 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal Christiaan Slabbert : 3 gold, 1 silver medal SA YOUTH AND ELITE YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS Darren Minnies and Andre van Huyssteen were priviledged to take part in the Senior National and Youth Swimming Championships and Olympic Trials which were held in Durban from 10 – 16 April 2016. Darren took part in the Youth Category, while Andre swam in the Elite Youth category. Darren took part in nine events, swam four personal best times and was part of the Senior Men A-relay team that won a bronze medal. Andre took part in eight events, swam four personal best times. He also swam in one final (400m Individual Medley) and two semi- finals (200m Freestyle and 200m Backstroke). In addition he swam as the anchor in the Men 4 x 200m Freestyle Western Province A-relay team, that won a bronze medal. LEVEL 3 SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS The Level 3 swimming championships took place in Port Elizabeth. Paarl Boys’ High boys did well. - To be completed. LEVEL 2 SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS The Level 2 swimming championships took place in East Londen and Boys’ High swimmers of the various Paarl clubs were well represented. Christian Slabbert received three gold, two silver and two bronze medals. Dehan van Dyk received one silver and one gold medal. Wynand Viljoen was up for one gold medal. Jan- Hendrik Basson received two gold and two bronze medals. Alex van Rooijen received one gold medal, two silver medals and one bronze medal. Walter Travers received two gold and two bronze medals. Bob Fick had a field day at the championships with six gold medals and two silver medals.
