PHOTO 219. Lengthwise cracks that occur mostly in internodal swellings at the base of insufficiently ripened shoots are considered characteristic of corky bark.

PHOTO 220. Cracks as in Photo 219 often occur across entire shoot lengths, but are usually detectable in a more intense format in basal internodes.
