The feedback received from the employees was very positive in the sense that the development of numeracy skills that took place, could also be applied in the living and work environment, for example: • To solve a mathematical or numerical problem, certain steps are required. These problem solving steps can also be applied in various other situations. • Employees help to solve problems for their employers. It is therefore important to know the basic steps of problem solving. The following simple model for problem solving was presented to them:
The success of this development pro gramme can be seen after the initial training, and it is mainly in the hands of the employers who should continuously encourage learning by implementing certain methodological and questioning techniques in their daily dealings with employees. This will lead to great benefits for both the business and the individual. Both of the programmes have been presented at Diemersfontein Wines and Raka Wines. More information about the programmes is available on the industry’s LMS under Hoedspruit Hub, which presented the training. The success of the training that was pre- sented can be seen through the evaluations. Follow-up initiatives have already been dis- cussed between the training provider and the farms where training was implemented.

an employee is responsible for, can be assessed by his or her direct superior according to the evaluation criteria on a scale of 3, 5 or 7. • When a new employee is appointed, the performance appraisal function can also be used to do the trial period evaluation monthly, to ensure that the employer only appoints the best possible employees to a permanent position. Through the skills evaluations that were done, various training interventions were identified that are based on the skills framework for viticulture as compiled
by the industry’s professional body. This framework includes the following three components: • Applied knowledge • Effective relationships • Skills in the workplace (technical knowledge). The following two training interventions were decided on following the skills evaluations: • Practical agriculture numeracy skills • Personal skills in the work and living environment.
• Through the course of both pro- grammes, it was reiterated that these steps can be used in many different situations, like balancing the diesel log book’s numbers, getting a faulty tractor to start, handling work relationships and dealing with different co-worker personality types, my child who is un- happy at school and our family’s finan - cial difficulties.
