Vinpro Technical Harvest Report 2026
DARLING DISTRICT
Post-harvest conditions were favourable, and vineyard leaves were retained for an extended period. Good winter chill resulted in particularly high accumulation of chill units. Although rainfall was below the long-term average, rainfall events were evenly distributed, which promoted soil infiltration and replenished groundwater levels to capacity. The timing of bud break was normal and, in some cases, a few days later than usual. Bud break was reasonably uniform, and flowering and fruit set progressed well. Véraison occurred in line with normal timelines and was mostly uniform. Harvest commenced seven to ten days earlier than normal, while late cultivars Summary The 2026 Swartland harvest will be remembered for a dry winter that prevailed into the summer months. Exceptionally warm conditions were experienced in November, December and March. As a result of the dry conditions, smaller berry size and lower yields were initially expected, although early cultivars more than compensated through significantly higher bunch numbers – driven by good winter chill and strong early canopy and root development. Ultimately, a slightly larger crop than the previous year was realised.
were harvested closer to their typical timing. Minor disease incidence and virtually no rot were observed, and under the drier conditions, weed control was easier, particularly in dryland bush vines. Groundwater reserves were lower, and several vineyard blocks exhibited early signs of water deficit. As a buffer against the impact of drier conditions, emphasis was placed on the removal of green and excess bunches at véraison. As in the rest of the Swartland, natural acidity levels in the grapes were lower; nevertheless, wine quality – particularly for red wines and Chenin Blanc – appears highly promising.
