Vinpro Technical Harvest Report 2026
Grape and wine quality
The warm growing season, healthy canopies and dry conditions pro moted rapid ripening and sugar accumulation. Moderate conditions
during the ripening period and well-balanced canopy density supported optimal acid and pH levels. Smaller berry size contributed to concentrated flavour and colour development and is expected to enhance mouthfeel in the final wines. These factors were largely positive and should contribute to good overall wine quality. Summary Despite dry conditions from August to January, the 2026 wine grape harvest in the Stellenbosch region exceeded producers’ expectations. This can be attributed to the confluence of favourable conditions during the previous season, good reserve levels, adequate winter chilling, sufficient winter rainfall, as well as excellent conditions throughout the growing season and welcome summer rainfall, all of which played a decisive role.

It was a season in which a large number of cultivars ripened simultaneously, yet patience was required to wait for phenolic ripeness. Fruit profiles in white wines appear strong, with tropical and stone fruit characteristics dominating. Red wines show above-average colour and extraction profiles, and overall, the wines display greater breadth on the palate compared with previous years. There may never be such a thing as a perfect vintage, but we certainly have little to complain about in terms of the quality of the 2026 season. – Dewald Heyns, Cellar Master, Villiera and Neethlingshof Estates “
