VERITAS AWARDS CELEBRATED IN GRAND STYLE It was an evening of glitz and glamour at the stylish 34th Veritas Awards, featuring another record number of medals to well-known brands, as well as novices. At the same time, the Duimpie Bayly Vertex trophy for the best wine entered was clinched by the KWV The Mentors Perold 2020, a Cape Blend of Pinotage/Shiraz/ Cabernet Sauvignon/Petite Sirah/Malbec. It is the third time that a Red Blend clinches the Vertex Award. At the glamorous dinner known as the “Oscars” of the wine industry in the Ballroom of the CTICC in Cape Town, guests celebrated the Veritas Awards and enjoyed an evening of splendid food, award winning wines and entertainment. The key sponsors of Veritas – SA Litho and Deloitte – were again joined by KykNet’s Ontbytsake TV, Nashua, Dry Ice International and Porex SA. Veritas gladly welcomes its partners and appreciate their enthusiasm and commitment in presenting the Awards. The Veritas tradition to honour industry leaders since 2009, was continued this year. Thereby, three leading personalities received the 2024 Living Legend Scroll of Honour for their dedication to and enthusiasm and passion for the domestic wine and brandy industries. They are Philip Jordaan, Tim Hutchinson and Dr Johann Rupert. We are proud to announce that a record number of 70 Double Gold and 175 Gold awards were handed out this year, together with 248 Silver Outstanding, 473 Silver and 201 Bronze. The Veritas Awards drew 1 265 entries. The seven most keenly contested categories in terms of entries received were: Red Blends (173), Sauvignon Blanc (134), Cabernet Sauvignon (111), Chardonnay (105), Chenin Blanc (101), Shiraz (92) and Pinotage (77). The judging panels consisted of five members each and we welcomed four international judges at the judging, sponsored by Dry Ice International. They were Michael Franz (USA), Uli Hoffmann (UK), Joe Wadsack (UK) and Jo Wessels (Germany). Wine lovers can again purchase the awarded wines through the VinoVeritas App by CTP/SA Litho. We launched this application in 2020 to enable consumers to order the awarded wines directly online for delivery to their doorstep by our partner, GetWine, and wine lovers have been most impressed with this service. Users of the Veritas purchasing app, can join us at the regular public wine tasting countrywide, presented under the Deloitte banner, and taste and buy as they work their way around the room with the awesome selection of 245 Double Gold and Gold wines. We are delighted that Deloitte fulfils this important marketing role for Veritas and the wine industry with their sponsorship. These tastings will be held on 24 October in Cape Town, 31 October in Johannesburg and 6 November in Durban. All the tastings will take place at the Deloitte premises in each city. THE MEDALISTS

The Veritas Awards, South Africa’s premier wine and brandy competition, attracted 1 265 medal contenders this year. An authoritative jury, comprising of 4 international and 84 local specialists, scrutinized candidates for Veritas fame during a marathon five-day blind tasting session. The seven most keenly contested categories in terms of entries received are: Red Blends (173), Sauvignon Blanc (134), Cabernet Sauvignon (111), Chardonnay (105), Chenin Blanc (101), Shiraz (92) and Pinotage (77). In total, 1 167 medals were awarded – 70 double gold, 175 gold, 248 silver outstanding, 473 silver and 201 bronze. Top scorers in the Double Gold medal stakes for Wine were Red Blends (9), Chenin Blanc (7), Chardonnay (6), Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage with 5 medals each. Shiraz (4), White Blends and Cap Classique with 3 medals each and Malbec 2 medals. A Double Gold medal each was awarded to Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir, Viognier, Petit Verdot and Museum White Wine. Double golds for Fortified wines were awarded to Cape Style (2), with 1 medal each Dessert Wine and Red Muscadel. Potstill Brandy excelled with 8 Double Gold awards, Vintage Brandy and Standard Brandy 1 each. In the Gold medal stakes, Cabernet Sauvignon (20) was tops, followed by Chardonnay (18), Red Blends (16), Shiraz (13), Chenin Blanc and Cap Classique 12 medals each, White Blends (11), Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot 10 medals each, Pinotage and Cape Style 7 medals each, Potstill Brandy (6), Heritage Vintage Wines (4) and White Muscadel (3). Two medals each was awarded to Cabernet Franc, Museum White Wine, Other White Cultivar, Petit Verdot, Cinsaut, Red Muscadel, Rosé, Standard Brandy and Viognier. THE DUIMPIE BAYLY VERITAS VERTEX AWARD 2024

The Board of Veritas decided in 2017 to name one wine as the overall cham pion of the competition. This top accolade, known as the Veritas Vertex Award, takes its name from the Latin vertex , which means “highest point”. The “vertex” term also refers to the ‘top’ or ‘high point’ of something, such as the vertex of an isosceles triangle, which is the ‘top’ corner opposite its base – which fits perfectly into the Veritas Awards notion of being the pin nacle of all the medals awarded. Francis Bayly, fondly known “Duimpie”, a Champion of the Industry, wine legend and former chairperson of the SA Young Wine Show and Veritas sadly passed away in August 2021. The board decided to name this award the Duimpie Bayly Veritas Vertex Award from 2021 in honour of his immense contribution to South African wine. A panel of judges was nominated to taste all the Double Gold winning wines on the final day of judging to select the Duimpie Bayly Veritas Vertex Award from them. The tradition of annually honouring a handful of industry leaders was continued at this year’s 34th Veritas Awards ceremony – known for many years as the Oscars of the Wine Industry – on Saturday 12 October. This award, instituted by the Veritas Awards in 2009, serves as recognition for exemplary service to the industry over the years, acknowledging the recipients’ commitment and paying homage to them for remarkable achievements. Thereby, three luminaries received the 2024 Legends Scroll of Honour for their dedication to and enthusiasm and passion for the domestic wine and brandy industries. PHILIP JORDAAN Philip Jordaan matriculated from Boishaai (Boys High) in Paarl and obtained a Diploma in Cellar technology from Elsenburg College in 1979. After his studies he worked for three harvest seasons at Rooiberg Wine Cellar under the supervision of the well-known former cellarmaster Dassie Smit. In 1983, he was appointed as winemaker and manager at Du Toitskloof Wine Cellar near Rawsonville. There he left his footprint as one of the best winemakers of his time. He worked at Du Toitskloof Cellars for 27 years during which he won numerous awards in a challenging industry. He was voted Winemaker of the Year in the Breedekloof/Worcester area twice; in 1995 and 2001. One of Philip’s major achievements was that he managed to change Du Toitskloof from a bulk wine cellar to one of the leading role players in the bottled wine market segment with various award-winning wines. Under Philip’s leadership the Du Toitskloof Sauvignon Blanc became the most sold single wine by one producer at the time. He was also successful in changing the perception of “box-wine” by putting quality cultivar wines in three litre-packaging. At Du Toitskloof he was the first producer to successfully package Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Cabernet/ Shiraz cultivars in a three-litre box.

Du Toitskloof was voted as Wine Magazine’s Best Value Cellar under his supervision for five consecutive years. Since 2004 he made his own wine, a Cabernet Franc which was awarded Best Unusual Red by Wine of the Month Club for three consecutive years, from 1998 to 2000. His Cabernet Franc was selected for the Nederburg Auction numerous times and was auctioned off for R120 per bottle in September 2010. He served on the tasting panels of Veritas and the Wine & Spirit Board of South Africa for many years. TIM HUTCHINSON Tim’s career in wine began 39 years ago when he joined Douglas Green of Paarl. In 1990 he was appointed CEO when DGB was formed, through the merger of Union Wine (Bellingham) and Douglas Green. In 1999, Tim led a management buyout of DGB with Graham Beck retaining a 20% shareholding. Then, as a major shareholder in the business, Tim’s remarkable journey gathered momentum. The expansion of production facilities in Wellington in 2000 with the building of a new premium winery for Bellingham in 2002. DGB’s acquisition of Boschendal followed in 2005, a milestone which gave DGB an iconic Cape wine brand to add to the portfolio. Subsequent acquisitions and development of notable wineries like Franschhoek Cellars, Brampton, Old Road Wine Company, Fryers Cove, Backsberg and now Avontuur further solidified DGB’s presence as leaders in the Premium Sector. During these years, Tim held the firm view that export success required a permanent presence in the key wine markets; so DGB marketing and sales offices were established in the UK, Holland, Germany, Canada, USA, Hong Kong, China and Dubai. On the domestic front, Tim’s vision was to provide an effective distribution route to the market, supported by a national sales network focused on building the DGB portfolio. He believed that investment in optimal resources and structures is as important as that in excellent vineyards and wineries. Tim’s development of DGB reflects a huge commitment to the environment and internationally recognized quality accreditations. As early as 2001, DGB was awarded multiple international accreditations for quality. Today, DGB is the only drinks business in South Africa which has the “Big Five” quality accreditations and features the largest solar installation in the Cape Winelands. Backsberg was the first fully verified Carbon Neutral winery in South Africa and all its wines are IPW and WIETA certified. Under Tim’s leadership, DGB invested in vineyards in several of the Cape’s most sought-after growing regions such as Elgin, the Helderberg, the Koo Plateau and Bamboes Bay on the West coast. Today DGB works with 317 different vineyard blocks and is the largest producer of wine from Certified Heritage Vineyards.

Currently in the Helderberg, DGB is replacing 130 hectares of virus-infected vineyards, showing its commitment to producing world class wine. These bold initiatives underpin DGB’s premium wine ambitions as part of a vision driven by Tim Hutchinson. These achievements have left an indelible mark on our industry. He is a remarkable legend in our industry. DR JOHANN RUPERT Johann Rupert grew up in Stellenbosch where he matriculated at Paul Roos and attended the University of Stellenbosch, studying economics and company law. After three years’ studies, Rupert embarked on a career in investment banking in New York City. In 1979 he returned to South Africa and founded Rand Merchant Bank which he led until 1984. He then joined and went on to head the Rembrandt Group. In 1988, he established Compagnie Financière Richemont, a Swiss-based luxury group of which he is currently chairperson. He also holds senior positions in several other businesses. Throughout his career, Johann Rupert has earned numerous awards and distinctions. Voted three times as Most Influential Leader in South Africa, he has also been named Business Leader of the Year on several occasions and was singled out by the World Economic Forum in 1992 as one of its Global Leaders of Tomorrow. He holds honorary doctorates from Stellenbosch University, Nelson Mandela University and the University of St Andrews. In 2009, he received the University of Witwatersrand’s Management Excellence Award and was named Chancellor of Stellenbosch University. As the chairman and largest shareholder of Richemont, the world’s third-largest luxury goods company, he has established himself as one of the most influential figures in the global luxury market. Johann’s international business career, however, did not prevent him from having a profound interest in the South African wine industry. Distillers Corporation was started by his father, Dr Anton Rupert, and Johann was well acquainted with the wine business over all the years. He has played an enormous role behind the scenes to guide and inspire the wine industry to achieve greater heights for more than 30 years. He founded the Institute of Viticulture and Oenology with the University of Stellenbosch and provided the startup finances for five years for this very important body in the wine industry, with its primary objective to co-ordinate long-term research. Johann wanted the wine industry needs to be at the forefront of research in SA – research to be applied in the industry to grow its international status as a world class producer of quality wines. The Rupert Foundation is well-known for granting bursaries for students to study viticulture and oenology to ensure enough young people join the industry. The Foundation ensures that learners with good matric marks and

passion get the opportunity to study at Elsenburg Agricultural College or the University of Stellenbosch. Johann’s investment in his wine farm, L’Ormarins in Franschhoek, as well as in other vine growing areas, has confirmed his passion to make the finest wines from the best vineyards in his drive for excellence. He was also the first grower to use the “stok-by-paaltjie” planting method on large scale with remarkable success in creating high quality wines on most of the farms that belong to the group. He was instrumental to start up the Old Vine project in 2007 with his financial support over ten years to get this project off the ground. This led to his decision to relocate the 43-year-old Chenin Blanc bush vines from Perdeberg to L’Ormarins in 2007 and 2008. These vines are now 61 years old and produces an exceptional wine – a first in the world of wine. As one of the most respected businesspeople in the world today, Johann has not neglected his South African wine roots. His sincere interest in the wine industry, his investment in the future of the industry, his passion for quality wines and his respect for nature has made him a true legend of our industry.
