The Veritas Awards, South Africa’s premier wine and brandy competition, attracted 1 312 medal contenders this year. An authoritative jury, comprising 70 local specialists, scrutinized candidates for Veritas fame during a marathon five-day blind tasting session. The seven most keenly contested categories in terms of entries received are: Red Blends (184), Sauvignon Blanc (137), Shiraz (116), Cabernet Sauvignon (104), Chenin Blanc (95), Chardonnay (90) and Pinotage (90). A total of 21 brandies were entered in three categories: Standard, Vintage and Potstill. In total, 1 177 medals were awarded – 103 double gold, 136 gold, 218 silver outstanding, 515 silver and 205 bronze. Top scorers in the Double Gold medal stakes for Wine were Sauvignon Blanc (12), Red Blends (9), Cap Classique and Chenin Blanc (8), Chardonnay and Museum White Wine (6), Shiraz and White Wine Blends (5), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Museum NLH, Museum Red and Pinotage (3), Cabernet Franc, Grenache Noir and Viognier with 2 medals each. A Double Gold medal each was awarded to Cinsaut, Heritage Vintage Wines, Malbec, Museum Cap Classique, Other White Cultivars, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir, Rosé, Sémillon, Straw Wine. Double golds for Fortified wines with 1 medal each were Cape Style, Dessert Wine White, Museum Dessert White, Museum Dessert Red and White Muscadel. Potstill Brandy excelled with 6 Double Gold awards, Vintage Brandy and Standard Brandy 1 each. In the Gold medal stakes, Red Blends (22) was tops, followed by Sauvignon Blanc (17), Shiraz (11), Pinotage and White Blends (7), Cap Classique and Merlot (6), Chardonnay and Museum Red Wine (5), Cabernet Sauvignon, Chenin Banc and Colombar (4), Cap Classique Rosé, Cape Style, Petit Verdot, Red Muscadel and White Muscadel 3 medals each, then Dessert Wine, Museum White Wine, Potstill Brandy, Rosé and Standard Brandy with 2 each. One medal each was awarded to Cabernet Franc, Heritage Vineyard Wines, Museum Dessert White, Museum NLH, Museum Cap Classique, Natural Sweet, Other Red Cultivars, Other White Cultivars, Perlé, Pinot Noir, Sherry, Straw Wine and White Wine from Red Cultivars.
