The Northern Region experienced a tough season. Packing of early varieties started with good quality; and late season cultivars included Crimson Seedless, Scarlotta, Red Globe, Sweet Globe and Autumn Crisp. The volumes of white seedless varieties were less than the long-term average this season. The region ended with 7,4 million cartons, coming close to its lower estimate. NORTHERN PROVINCES The Orange River region’s volumes picked up after a slower than usual start. Early varieties, which included Prime, Early Sweet, Flame and Arra Passion Fire displayed good quality sugars and eating quality. Overall, the season produced good quality grapes and the region concluded with 22,3 million cartons. ORANGE RIVER The Olifants River region started packing later than usual this season. Packed cultivars included Red Globe, Flame, Tawny, Sugraone and Crimson Seedless. The region concluded the season with 3,6 million cartons, coming close to its lower estimate. This region experienced a very challenging season due to a heatwave together with general climate challenges, resulting a decrease of about 25% in production volumes in certain cases. OLIFANTS RIVER The Berg River region’s season concluded earlier than usual this year. By the end of week 8 the region had already packed over 16 million cartons and concluded the season with a good average total of 19,1 million cartons. Sweet Globe and Autumn Crisp, two of the Berg River region’s main cultivars, comprised most of the harvest, while fair amounts of Adora Seedless were also packed. Preparations focused on optimal loads and quality, but rain in the early season negatively influenced the shelf life of Prime and Starlight. Overall, the condition and quality of the grapes for this region was good. BERG RIVER The Hex River region experienced a below average season, but despite difficult circumstances packed more than 25 million cartons this year. The latter part of the season brought challenges, including the colouring of Crimson Seedless and maintaining quality. Commercial margins were lower than anticipated this season. HEX RIVER
