NORTHERN PROVINCES

Packing in the Northern Provinces started about two weeks later, and although a new volume high of 7,88 million cartons was packed the above average rain in this summer rainfall area somewhat put a brake on the intakes.

ORANGE RIVER

Packing in the Orange River also started about two weeks later than the previous season but was then disrupted and delayed in week one due to unseasonal rains in the Northern Cape. Damage to some of the later cultivars was less than initially estimated. Producers continued to pack with caution which resulted in a better-than-expected volume of 18,5 million cartons despite the setback.

OLIFANTS RIVER

Packing started about two weeks later, with excellent ripening and harvesting conditions. The crops were very good, both from a volume and quality perspective. As the season progressed the estimate for this region had to be increased with a welcome relieve to have reached a new volume high of 4,4 million cartons.

BERG RIVER

Despite packing having started two weeks later, this region had a very positive outlook throughout the season. Due to ongoing good weather, enough water availability after last winter’s good rainfall, large berry sizes and the overall good quality of grapes all contributed to this region packing over 20 million cartons, the highest intake on record.

HEX RIVER

After a two week later start this region also experienced relatively good weather conditions with an 8% increase in XL berry sizes contributing to the highest intake on record of nearly 24 million cartons.
