NORTHERN PROVINCES

This was the only region that has shown significant growth over the past few years. This region ended the packing season with a 14% lower year-on-year (YOY) intake of 6,10 million cartons due to the unusually high rainfall experienced at the start of their season.

ORANGE RIVER

The expectation that this region will again shift some volumes to dried grapes, was factored into the estimates. The region had a good season with good quality grapes being harvested and were comfort- ably able to reach the expectation with an intake of almost 19,86 million cartons.

OLIFANTS RIVER

Having been hardest hit by the 2016 – 2018 drought, there was uncertainty as to how the vines in the smallest region would perform, the initial crop estimate was quite conservative. Fortunately, the vines recovered well and, along with favourable weather throughout the season, this region came close to normal intake figures with 3,32 million cartons, a 40% volume increase YOY.

BERG RIVER

Compared to the other regions, this region had the most favourable weather conditions during the season, leading to very good quality grapes throughout the harvest. Despite the estimate for this region being revised upwards the volumes packed exceeded it and ended even higher with a 18% increase YOY to 16,27 million cartons. This was the Berg River’s biggest crop to date.

HEX RIVER

This region started more than a week early. However, unseasonal summer rain in week 3 caused damage to especially mid-season grapes. The Hex finished the season with an intake volume of 20,60 million cartons, a 10% increase YoY despite the rain experienced in week 3.
