PET, or polyethylene terephthalate, is a type of plastic commonly used to create food-grade containers such as punnets. rPET stands for recycled PET, which is highly recyclable. Using rPET saves significant amounts of energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to using virgin PET, a petroleum product. Recycling PET also helps prevent plastic waste from ending up in the environment, where it can take hundreds of years to decompose naturally. Olympic Fruit prefers the use of rPET punnets and encourages producers to be aware of the rPET content of their punnets and to move towards 100% rPET punnets.
