La Rochelle Yearbook 2024

JAARVERSLAG Quinne Ludick, who matriculated in 2023, earned a well-deserved special mention at The Face of Design event hosted by the Cape Town Creative Academy in the earlier part of the year. Out of 900 design students, she stood out as one of just 25 learners recognised for her exceptional artwork. This achievement highlights her talent and potential in the creative field. Other academic achievements include: Erin Meyer’s (Grade 12) prose written piece “The Climb to the Stars” was selected from submissions from schools across South Africa and published in the acclaimed SACEE anthology, English Alive . She was one of 7 learners asked to present their piece at the official book launch. Erin was the trophy winner in the Paarl Valley Eisteddfod Grade 12 Poetry division, with her poem “The Deep”. On the 7th of May 2024, Mrs Oosthuizen and Ackerman’s Grade 11 First Additional Language learners embarked on an educational outing to the District Six Museum in Cape Town. They took a tour around the area, accompanied by local tour operators to gain more knowledge about this time period. The purpose of this visit was to delve into the historical significance of District Six and better understand their prescribed novel, Buckingham Palace - District Six by Richard Rive. Then on 16 May 2024, the ladies accompanied the Grade 10 English First Additional Language learners on a visit to the Cape Town Holocaust Centre. The learners, who had been studying the Play of the Diary of Anne Frank as their prescribed drama, were guided through the permanent exhibition that combines text, archival photographs, film footage, documents, multimedia displays and recreated environments that commemorate the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. This visit aimed to enhance the learners’ understanding of the drama by further educating them on its historical context. Exchange programme: During 2024, La Rochelle received exchange students from two of South Africa’s most successful exchange agencies, FSA Youth Exchange and GROW Abroad. These agencies provided not only our pupils, but also exchange students from abroad, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We had two unique and special multi-exchange relations between two students, Mari Joubert (Grade 11) and Anna-Lena Hakenes (Grade 11) from Neustadt, Germany. During the December holidays in 2023, Mari went to Neustadt, Germany for her exchange program and later this year, Anna-Lena visited Mari for her exchange program. Not only has the language barrier become something of the past, but a truly unique sisterhood has formed.
