La Rochelle Yearbook 2024
VERENIGINGS
GROENKOMITEE “It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement, the greatest source of visual beauty, the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living” – David Attenborough This year, the Green Committee adopted a positive approach. We are all aware of and somewhat frustrated by constant negative environmental news and issues. To change the way Larries think and feel about the environment, we encouraged them to focus on the positive aspects. We mainly achieved this through our monthly Green Committee board: The Good News Corner. This board showcased inspiring quotes, visuals, and ideas.
CHOIR The 2024 Choir year for the La Rochelle Girls’ High School Choir was filled with hard work, determination and magical music. We started the year with a weekend workshop in February in which we welcomed new choir members and started to learn new music that is now part of our repertoire. In February, we also helped to advertise the school’s extracurricular with a Choir stand at the 2024 Open Day. The choir was also involved in the Student Council 4M video, which was played during the 4M Big Brag. Then, our competition season started in April with our very first performance, which was our performance at the Tygerberg Children’s Choir Showcase with other choirs on the 21st of April. We performed songs Tsitsikamma, Heungrans, Jubilate Deo and a mass choir piece with all the other involved choirs, where La Rochelle’s choir received many compliments. On the 9th of May was the first Round of ATKV Applous, in which we reformed our repertoire, including Mangisondele, which we successfully went through the final round to be held in Cape Town on the 26th of July. We competed in the category of Merit Choirs. On the 18th of July, the choir took part in Paarl Sing with many other high school choirs, including the San Francisco Girls Chorus. On the 26th of July, the choir went to Cape Town to compete in our most important competition of the year. Our performance was nothing short of brilliant in which we won the category of Hoërskool Meriete: Meisies; Beste Uitvoering van ‘n Afrikaanse komposisie and Beste Uitvoering van ‘n Voorgeskrewe Lied. Ms Gerber, the pianist and the girls did an unbelievably wonderful job and deserved all their achievements. Our last competing performance for the year was on the 22nd of August, in which the choir took part in the Paarl Valley Eisteddfod, where we received a standing ovation due to our excellent performance in which we received a Cum Laude. Even better, we performed in our beautiful new navy choir dresses. Not only was the music beautiful, but so were the girls. That’s the end of this choir 2024 competition season, and we could not be any prouder of our strongly-willed and passionate choir.
