La Rochelle Yearbook 2023
VRL
The members of the RCL are appointed to make a difference in the lives of those whom they represent and initiate strategies aimed at prioritising the well-being of all the learners. At the beginning of our journey as the RCL, we set out an ambitious vision for what we wanted the council to represent and to remind us of our goals, values and objectives. It read: “ Our vision as the RCL of 2023 is to strengthen the connections that build the bridge between learner and grade and to lead where discipline follows .” As in the past, the RCL welcomed all the new Grade 9 – 12 learners the day before school officially started in January and gave them a tour of the premises – the familiar faces helped to ease their first-day jitters! The RCL continued the tradition of arranging the Fruit Festival . On 3 February, the enthusiastic new Daisies had the chance to make their Miladies proud with their creative fruity outfits during the Miss Tutti Frutti Fashion Parade . Prizes were also awarded to Miss Personality and Miss Edible . Furthermore, the RCL introduced Market Monday . We sold table space to learners who then had an opportunity to market their goods on Mondays, and to earn an income in the process. The Grade 12 RCL members helped design the Matric jerseys and badges. This exercise taught us early on that it is not possible to please everyone! Another big project of the RCL was to incorporate La Rochelle’s core values of L ove, A cceptance and R espect and strengthen them during fun assemblies and activities: Term 1 focussed on Larrie Love . We made everyone write anonymous compliments/niceties on heart
shaped papers and pass them around to one another. The learners thoroughly enjoyed this and it lifted their spirits. During register classes in Terms 2 and 3 we performed activities emphasising respect
and acceptance and enjoyed an acceptance picnic , where learners brought food from different cultures to school and shared it with friends. The Larrie of the Month was also an initiative the RCL launched in 2023. This was an opportunity for each grade to vote for one learner in their grade whom they thought deserved to be acknowledged for their kindness or helpfulness. The aim was for those Larries who sometimes feel insignificant and neglected, to be recognised and appreciated. We ended the year on a high note with the Mother and Daughter Picnic in September. The theme was Positivi tea . Mothers and daughters had the opportunity to paint clay mugs and enjoy picnic boxes. The painting was a success and seemed to be another of the many superpowers that mothers have! We looked to change the impact the RCL had on the learners and the school in 2023 and I take great pleasure in proclaiming that the goal we set out to accomplish, has been achieved. Our sincerest thanks go to Mrs Carla Uys who was the driving force behind the RCL this year: no matter the day or the project, she was always ready to put in 110% effort to make sure we achieved success. The RCL will always have an immensely special place in my heart. We were a small family, and no matter how busy everyone was, the group was always ready and willing to take on more responsibilities. I am proud of what we have achieved – it is incredible what a small group of girls with a vision can achieve. I wish the RCL of 2024 all the best in their endeavours to serve the Larries.
