Chlorine is in practice more commonly associated with saline conditions, where it, together with Na, prompts the vine to take up water at a higher osmotic po tential, but can also have a direct toxic effect. The symptoms of NaCldamage are browning of the basal leaves and resultant necrosis of leaf edges, with CI apparently being more harmful than Na as CI is more readily assimilated and i.a. accumulates in petioles, with values of 0.65% and more during flowering (Fig. 27).
