basal leaves and resultant necrosis of leaf edges, with CI apparently being more harmful than Na as CI, because it is assimilated more readily and is inter alia accumulated in petioles, resulting in values of 0.65% and higher at flowering time. However, if the levels in leaf blades and petioles exceed 0.50% and 1.0% respectively, at any time, Cl toxicity is expected (Figure 25). Consequently, the use ok KCl is not recommended on saline soils.
