EFFECT OF COVER CROPS ON SOIL CARBON AND MINERALS

Cover crops and their mulches contribute to soil health by increasing soil carbon, which is an indication of how much organic matter is present in the soil. Organic matter creates better growing conditions for vines by improving water infiltration, retention, and drainage; resisting soil compaction and erosion; increasing soil fertility; and supporting soil microbes.

This chapter discusses the interactions of cover crops and their mulches with soil carbon and minerals. The levels of nitrogen, potassium, and other nutrients in the soil are described. Trials were conducted in the Coastal region, Breede River valley, and Olifants River valley.
