Little Karoo A study byVan Huyssteen and colleagues looked at the effect of cover crops on soil conditions and weed control in a flood-irrigated vineyard near Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape. The cover crop was sown in March and sprayed with herbicide in August. Dry matter derived from the cover crop was used to mulch the soil surface during the grapevine-growing season. The general trend was that weeds decreased as the amount of mulch on the soil surface increased. The authors concluded that 8 tonnes per hectare of mulch derived from a vetch should be sufficient to control weeds throughout summer. They speculate that this relatively large quantity of mulch is necessary because of increased soil nitrogen in plots with vetch cover crops.
