Rugbyverslag

Wat ’n spesiale voorreg om in die HJS se 150-jaarvieringe te deel! Dit was altyd bestem om ’n spesiale tyd te wees vir elke persoon in die HJS “Familia”. The World Schools Festival was put together not only to celebrate Paarl Boys’ High’s 150th year but also to present the premier rugby tourna- ment of South Africa where the ten best schools in SA are matched against the ten best schools from across the world. The rugby was very entertaining and every day all entrance tickets were sold out as families and school boy rugby lovers streamed through the gates of Brug Street to watch the best in school boy rugby compete. The PBHS 1st team narrowly lost to a very good team from Argentina, namely the Jaguares U19s but they made up with a great “pay-back” per- formance against Christchurch from NZ win- ning 25 - 7 to end off the festival on a high. No time to rest as the local season kicked off in the Western Cape. Having achieved three un- beaten seasons in 2015, 2016 and 2017 in South Afric, everyone was always going to be better than their best against Boys’ High. Due to the severe drought we had to share fields with Boys’ Primary whilst the Astro was being built and the field in front of the school was used for the 150 year gala evening. By Wildeklawer klop HJS vir Affies en Waterk- loof en die tweede span behaal ook groot sukses. Tuis moes ons tydens die Grey-naweek vir die eerste keer in drie jaar die knie buig teen ’n goeie Grey-span. During the June/July holidays PBHS was given the privilege of hosting the prestigious pro- vincial Craven and Academy U18 Weeks. The facilities and fields were in mint condition and

each day the attendance records were broken as spectators were streaming through the gates to enjoy Boys’ High hospitality and top school boy provincial rugby. Congratulations to WP as the unofficial winners of the week, and to Adrian Alberts as captain of the Craven Week team and all our boys that played in WP representa- tive teams. The first team had been experiencing a “up- and-down” season and many people believed we were going to lose this Interschools. The theme for the week in preparation was “Wak- ing the Lion”, and the boys indeed rose to that. Against all odds they played one of their best games of the season and proved once again that anything is possible in rugby! The boys had a superior tactical approach and executed the game plan to perfection. Pinning Gim with long kicks in their own area and then forming a solid defensive wall that put a lot of pressure on the Gim counter attack. A huge team effort se- cured the 24 - 21 win on Faure Street and Paarl was Blue once again, giving Paarl Boys’ High bragging rights for the fourth consecutive year. Three of our boys were chosen for the SA Schools team with Adrian Alberts as captain of the team which won against England and Wales and narrowly lost to France. Louwan Horn was selected for the SA U18 Sevens team that won Gold at the Common Wealth Youth games and will now be heading to the Junior Olympics. Le Roux Booysen also played in the Common Wealth Youth Games for Namibia Sevens U18 team. There were three Boys’ Highers in the WP Craven Week team with Adrian Alberts as captain, six WP Cravenweek XV and five WP Academy Week

players. All these teams were “unofficial win- ners” of their respective tournaments. Five WP U17 Sevens players and PBHS U17 Sevens team were winners of the Marius Schoeman Sevens Tournament at Paarl Gim. Eight of our boys were invited to the SA EPD U17 camp in Octo- ber. Sean Erasmus was WP Cravenweek coach, SA Schools head coach and facilitated the SA EPD camp in October. Ryno Rust again formed part of the SA EPD U16 camp as head of con- ditioning. The team culture continues to grow and there is a strong feeling of Familia amongst the boys. The players spent many great Sundays together in worship and giving thanks. We remain bless- ed as a team and grateful for our talents, giving glory at every opportunity. A season is never an individual effort but rather a team effort in every way! Thanks are due to Brent Martini from the Paarl Family Church for all his guidance and support of the team and to my management team for always standing by me for the past five years. I hope to see this team continue their good work under the new head coach, Peter Engledow. May we always be Familia and support each other at every possible opportunity, always giv- ing praise to God for all he has done and blessed us with. ETFG! Familia!
