Suonare

Suonare, Paarl Boys’ High School’s distinguished wind band, boasts a year of outstanding musical accomplishments and growth. From the early annual picnic concert against the backdrop of the picturesque Paarl Mountain to the grand finale at the annual gala concert, the journey of Suonare throughout the academic year has been one of exceptional performances and significant milestones. The resounding success at the school’s annual picnic concert provided a glimpse of the musical excellence that would define Suonare’s trajectory throughout the year. The second term unfolded as a crescendo of achievements, starting with the Band Extravaganza at the University of Stellenbosch. Suonare shared the stage with notable schools, including SACS and Durbanville High School, in a celebration of wind band music. The month continued with the annual derby against Grey College and reached its pinnacle with the Windworx Fanfare, a unique wind band eisteddfod that displayed Suonare’s versatility with multiple performances. At the annual Orkesfees in August, Suonare joined distinguished bands for a collaborative performance that included Wynberg Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools, the Frank Pietersen Music Centre, the

Wynberg Progress Christmas Band and the HJS Old Boys Band. The mass band performance featuring members from all participating groups, along with guest artist Jak de Priester, marked the Highlight of the evening. Suonare members then participated in the re established Stellenbosch Youth Orchestra. Ten learners, including two former students, played a significant role in this orchestra’s revival, highlighting the dedication and musical prowess of Suonare members. The year concluded on a triumphant note with the annual gala concert. Suonare captivated the audience with arrangements from pop and rock icons Billy Joel and the Beatles, bidding farewell to the successful year with fan favourites. Suonare has not only showcased musical excellence but also demonstrated the dedication and passion of its members. The legacy of Suonare at Paarl Boys’ High School stands as a testament to the enduring impact of music in the school’s cultural fabric, promising a future filled with continued growth and musical accomplishments.
