As always, the year started with five days of full-day rehearsals at the culture camp, where we were, again, treated with an inspiring masterclass presented by Prof Awie van Wyk, the previous conductor of the PUK choir. At the camp, we also spent some time discussing our goals for the year and choosing the leader corps. Some of the highlights of the year included our performances at our annual choir festival, singing at the Blue/Grey evening in Bloemfontein and ending on a high note at the

Gala concert, held at NTT Volkswagen Paarl. However, everyone agrees that there is one performance that stood out head and shoulders above the rest. For the first time, Cantare was invited to perform in the beautiful Cape Town City Hall at a sold-out performance of the Choral Celebration Network Foundation’s festival series. It was a wonderful privilege to share the stage with esteemed choirs such as DF Malan High School, Tygerberg Children’s Choir and the Zolani Youth Choir.

The famous composer John Rutter once said that a school without a choir is like a body without a soul. After the silence of the past two years, we can whole-heartedly agree with Rutter. In 2022, the members of Cantare reminded us just how fortunate we are to boast a school choir of high caliber, and also how strong a bond it creates when people are singing and making music together.
