The English Debating fraternity of Paarl Boys’ High are very proud to be able to end their year knowing that they have made it through the lockdown years and are once again at a level of excellence where they feel comfortable. We started the year as usual with our second annual English Debating camp at the school, a tradition started in 2020. The purpose of this is for the new debaters to meet their coach, to practise debating and simply to mix and mingle with experienced debaters. As is the norm, our debaters took part in the Boland League, in which a debate takes place almost every Wednesday evening. It is worth mentioning that our senior A team won every single one of their matches. These debates usually happen at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch – always a welcome outing for our boys. After this, PBHS qualified to take part in the provincial debating league held at the University of Cape Town, making it all the way to

the quarterfinals. Two of our boys, Francois Rademeyer and Nicolaas Kruger, were then selected for Western Cape trials to compete on a national level. Back on home turf, the English debaters organized an interhouse debating competition. The day house Zeederberg ultimately carried off the laurels in this competition. Nathan Fobian, one of our senior A team members, deserves special mention. He represented South

Africa in the World Schools Debating League in Pretoria. The praticipants competed online due to lingering international Covid-19 protocols and fears. Nathan ranked 26th internationally as a speaker, a feat that we are extremely proud of. We ended the year with a new tradition, a braai at the Paarl Boys’ High Museum, to end our debating year together and to thank the boys who sacrificed weekends, nights and personal time beyond the normal extramural timetable.
