Boishaaier 2017

Hockey A phrase to sum up hockey at PBHS 2017 would be “Tough but durable”. This perfectly encapsulates the attitude of the coaching staff and players: 12 teams training on the Girls High turf often in the evening, working with what we had regarding facilities and still playing against the Cape schools who are ranked number 1, 2 and 6 in the country. And then the First team being unbeaten at Interschools for the third time in a row. With the assistance of dedicated staff, the hockey season was filled with highs, lows and amazing feats from all the players. The season started with the first ever overseas tour to Holland, facilitated by Mr Tesselaar. The boys had training days, games and interaction with Dutch teams as well as the opportunity to attend a premier club game. All who were part of the experience returned with glowing reports of their experience. There were a number of boys representing the school at provincial level with Sipho Mila being selected to the U18A Boland team and Brend Spreeth and Joshua Shone in the U18B team.

The big derby against Grey was upon us in no time and soon the teams were on the bus for the trip up to Bloemfontein. It was a tough round of fixtures against one of the best hockey schools in South Africa. Well done to our Seccies team who won their match. The first team can be proud of their performance as well which was a nail-biting affair from start to finish. The team played with great structure, managing to keep a lot of the possession throughout the match and in doing so created numerous goal-scoring opportunities, but were unable to find the back of the net and the game finished 1 – 2. The Interschools results spoke of Boys’ High’s improvement: 6 games played, 5 wins and 1 draw. It is also the third consecutive year that the first team has won their Interschools game. After an exhausting season, the teams were looking forward to a well- deserved break … until the off-season high performance begins.
