SWIMMING

Swimming Paarl Boys’ High had an impressive swimming season, winning the Frank Myburgh Gala in Malmesbury, the Interschools Gala (PBHS 229 vs Gim 162), Bridgehouse’s Fastest Four Gala and coming fourth in the A-league Cape Schools’ Gala behind Rondebosch, Paul Roos and Bishops. Swimming captains Andre van Huyssteen and Pierre Pretorius both showed their mettle at all these galas.

SA SCHOOLS SWIMMING TEAM The following swimmers were selected for the WP Schools’ swimming team to participate in the SA Schools’ Championships: Alex van Rooijen, Werner Strauss, Bob Fick, Ivan van Rooijen, Kobus Koch and Angus Solomons. SSA JUNIOR NATIONALS Bob Fick again qualified and took part in the Elite SSA Junior National Championships in Durban in March. SA SENIOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Andre van Huyssteen qualified for the Senior National Championships in Durban. As a team, the boys took part in Bridgehouse’s Fastest Four Gala in October. Due to the water restrictions this gala was held at Paarl Boys’ High pool. With only one U15 and one U18 team, PBHS managed to set nine new Boland league records.

We had individual representation at the following prestigious meetings: WESTERN PROVINCE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS (Stellenbosch) The following boys participated: Darren Minnies (Old Boy) Andre van Huyssteen, Pierre Pretorius, Dewan Bubb, Alex van Rooijen, Werner Strauss, Christian Slabbert, Bob Fick, Angus Solomons, Kobus Koch, Ivan van Rooijen and Eric Slabbert. All the boys did their best and the results showed. SENIOR NATIONAL SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS Andre van Huyssteen qualified for the Senior National Swimming Championships which took place in Durban at Kings Park in April. YOUTH NATIONAL SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS AND SA NATIONAL JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS Bob Fick qualified for both these events, which took place simultaneously at Kings Park in Durban in March.

Due to the severe water restrictions, galas for 2018 will be water-dependent.
