The Dramatic Arts & Film Evening 2023
On the evening of 18 October, the Dramatic Arts Department celebrated the talent and skills displayed by our learners in drama and film productions. The attendees were parents and friends who enthusiastically showed their appreciation. It was a beautiful evening, held in the newly renovated black-and-white dramatic arts space. Fittingly, the auspicious programme put together by the Grade 12 Drama students showcased their talent and growth over the past 3 years. • De Wet Nel (Grade 9) read a poem, using radio as a medium. • All five films entered in the Filmit competition were screened, each introduced by its director. • All the films were received with well-deserved applause. • The winning documentary film Keys aren’t just black and white is about Mike Wang, a Grade 11 learner and a multiple award-winning classical pianist. Interviews with Mike and his school friends, as well as video footage of Mike performing in concert, showcased the different facets of Mike Wang. • Later in the programme Mike entertained the audience with a joyous rendition of ‘My Favourite Things’ from The Sound of Music . • The short film A Man’s Best Friend used dogs
owned by teachers and was produced under the logo Black and White Theatre Co @ Wiwe. This enabled more learners to be involved, including learners from La Rochelle and Paarl Girls’ High. • The short film Say Cheese was produced by Grade 8 and 9 learners who had to work as an ensemble. This film received many awards, including the Special Jury Certificate for Screenwriting, Best Production Design, Best Music Editor, Best Wardrobe, Best Ensemble, and Best Editor of a Short Film. • The short film The Making of … was a mockumentary under the category ‘Other’. The director was Tom Siebert (Grade 11). • In the animation category, Charl Steenkamp, a very talented Grade 9 learner, submitted content that shows much promise. The Dramatic Arts Department was bursting at the seams this year. That gives us the confidence to say we endeavour to grow and produce multi-skilled learners who can sustain a healthy balance between academic work, culture and sport, true to the proud mantra of Paarl Boys’ High!
