PHOTO 112. A cross section of grapevine wood (Photo 111) displays rotting patterns that may cause confusion. In such instances it is essential to seek expert advice.

PHOTO 113. In nurseries a sudden wilted appearance of leaves is characteristic of Phytophthora – especially in instances such as this ungrafted Richter 99. Note that dead cuttings/vines (as in the photo) are the result of poor/no initial root formation and should therefore not be confused with Phytophthora.
