A Guide to Grapevine Abnormalities in South Africa - P.G. GOUSSARD

PART 10

A part from research-based and strict scientifically based guidelines according to which short and long term cultivation practices should be approached and applied, the occurrence of abnormality phenomena – with which the injudicious/faulty/negligent execution of specific actions is associated – are by no means unknown, in which case it will continue to occur in affected vines on a sporadic basis. Because considerable economic damage/losses can be caused in such cases, it is here also of importance that relevant, practice-based procedures should be executed in consultation with experts. Overall is it also important not only to remain abreast of identification procedures regarding such induced abnormality phenomena, but also to have a basic knowledge of vine morphology and phenology – especially in cases where specific actions are limited to fixed time intervals. Of course – due to the massive scale and high degree of diversity as related to phenomena in this category – it was attempted to focus mainly on truly characteristic examples. Overall one can thus state that the continual, timely and judicious exercising of specific practices/ actions/techniques can be singled out as being of cardinal importance to optimal in-vineyard performance of individual vines, in conjunction with the sustainable and profitable cultivation thereof.
