Mealybug.
PHOTO 307. In winter grapevines infested with mealybug are mostly associated with black, sooty mould covered trunks/cordons.
PHOTO 308. With the onset of spring (in the absence of ants) the incidence of ladybirds, acting as natural enemies of mealybug, are indicative of mealybug activity – after completion of an overwintering phase under loose bark sections of affected grapevines.
