Stem grooving.

PHOTO 209. Typical of stem grooving are swellings (thickened bark with a coarse surface) at the top end of graft unions – the scion trunk sections are noticeably thicker than those of the rootstocks. In this instance (Cabernet franc/Richter 99) overall dieback has also begun.

PHOTO 210. Lengthwise grooving and pitting of underlying wood is exposed by bark removal at the top end of the graft union in the grapevine in Photo 208.
